There are going to be a lot of people disappointed.

But really, I think the big hangup is 4e. As C&C showed, you can make a 3e game pretty old school. But I don't see how they can reconcile 4e with past editions.
It wouldn't be that hard to make 4e suck as hard as past editions. Essentials made a modest start.

Seriously, though, if the designers can miraculously tease out the 'real D&D' feel from the morrass of broken rules and bad ideas that were also in the past editions that define 'real D&D,' they may make something wonderful.

From the standpoint of WotC, customers being disappointed in 5E is fine as long as they buy it and play it. It's like a superhero movie. How bad does it have to suck for you not to see it anyways?

But which modules will actually get mind-share and support? I don't think they'll have a lot of problem getting many people to take a good look at it. Plenty of people bought 4e core books too though.

One of the inevitable disappointments of having lots of viable options is that some people find out that their preferences weren't as widespread as they previously thought. :p

I prefer to think of this as a temporary thing that can be surmounted eventually--not the least by realizing that you don't need other peoples' sanction to enjoy what you enjoy.

The messenger is likely to get blamed during the transition from the first state to the second one.

You missed out:

Bring back Thac0
Bring back Vancian magic
Bring back Save or Die

Among other similar threads.

I'm not a major fan of 4E, (my favourite of all time is BECMI) but getting rid of these things was brilliant and a thumbs up for 4E (except 3E for Thac0). There is no-one in their right mind that would think otherwise. I'm wondering if those threads are there just to wind people up.

I was excited about 5E coming, but after reading thread after thread of people wanting silly things I'm losing interest.

If they were to put that stuff back in - disappointed wouldn't be a strong enough word.

I'm not going off D&D because of WOTC. I'm starting to go off D&D because of the players.

We play PF/1e and we like:

Thac0
Vancian magic
Save or Die

There is no-one in their right mind that would think otherwise. I'm wondering if those threads are there just to wind people up.

That's like your opinion man.

There are already a number of threads and posts showing up with strident howls of "If this is in the next edition, it is a deal breaker!" It seems like a very poor way of getting listened to. The squeaky wheel that no amount of grease will help usually just gets replaced. (All right, so the analogy makes zero sense when I read it too.)

I just know that if I really only want to play Fourth Edition, there is no sense in me posting anything or in anyone listening to me. I can just play Fourth and get on with it and stop annoying others.

Fortunately, as much as I like the Fourth Edition, I also like to play a variety of games. I am open to whatever new things or old things and combination of those things the Fifth Edition does. I like to read new ideas here in this fresh and exciting forum. I have even started having fun playing Pathfinder and 3.5 Birthright, which opens whole new vistas for someone who skipped D&D between 1986 and 2009.
