Catalyst Game Labs--best known for Shadowrun and BattleTech--is launching a Kickstarter for a roleplaying game based on the giant robot cartoon series, Voltron!

Not much is known about it yet--there's a 'Launching Soon' page on Kickstarter which says "Unleash the power of unity, pilot giant mechs, and defend the universe in Voltron: The Roleplaying Game". However, Catalyst did say back in December 2023, that the game would use their new Dice Core system.

Voltron was an animated show which launched in 1984 and featured a giant space robot called Voltron, piloted by a team of adventurers. The Kickstarter launches next week.

I love mech anime but I was never huge on Voltron/Go-Lion. I probably wouldn't pick it up, but am a little curious how they pull it off.

What else have they made?
As per Morrus' post, they are the publishers of the old FASA properties of both Shadowrun and Battletech, the latter of which isn't an RPG per se though there is an RPG as part of the line known as Mechwarrior, of which two are currently being sold: A Time of War is more akin to the Battletech rules, while Destiny is rules-light. Destiny may also be more narrative focused, which IMHO would be a better direction for a Voltron RPG, though I would expect the Voltron RPG to be a wholly different system than either Shadowrun, ATOW, or Destiny.

The Netflix reboot was really good, had quite a bit of lore, and actually provides really solid examples of what the Voltron riders would actually look like as an adventuring party.

Basically, the show felt like it was based on an already existing RPG.
Sadly that was a case of the fanbase turning me off from enjoying the series, due to fan toxicity surrounding popular "ships." There were even a fair number of death threats against the creators and voice actors from hardliners of these ships. It was that bad. So I actually stopped watching it.

It won't be, but it would be kinda cool if the Voltron RPG used Renegade's Essence 20 system . . . to make easy synergy with Transformers and Power Rangers RPGs!!
Shame the system itself is trash.

That’s cool. Love me some Voltron, but I have basically zero confidence in Catalyst.
The only company I have less confidence in is #Renegade.

Sadly I think this is just standard operating procedure in fandoms at this point.

It was thinking about an old RPG about mechas, Mekton Z, by the same publishers of Cyberpunk 2030.

Using a known franchise may be a double edged sword, because the brand can be a great hook for no-players but the continuity doesn't allow much creative freedom.

Depends on the franchise. Sometimes there's a lot of space outside the core storyline.
