Catalyst Game Labs--best known for Shadowrun and BattleTech--is launching a Kickstarter for a roleplaying game based on the giant robot cartoon series, Voltron!

Not much is known about it yet--there's a 'Launching Soon' page on Kickstarter which says "Unleash the power of unity, pilot giant mechs, and defend the universe in Voltron: The Roleplaying Game". However, Catalyst did say back in December 2023, that the game would use their new Dice Core system.

Voltron was an animated show which launched in 1984 and featured a giant space robot called Voltron, piloted by a team of adventurers. The Kickstarter launches next week.

I didnt think Voltron was still a thing with a fanbase wanting to emulate it in an RPG, oh well it was fun at the time and might be generalised to other giant robots stories

Very cool. I'm really curious to see how the mechanics work. A lot of sci fi games like this struggle a bit with different scales of vehicle. It with be interesting to see how the game switches from human conflicts, to the lions, to giant robots.

In addition to the nostalgia fans, Voltron had relatively recent Netflix reboot series that was pretty poplar, and there is a lot of talk about a live action movie being made soon.

Beyond the old stuff and the new, there was also a 2011 sequel version on Nickelodeon that I really liked. And a 90s CGI version called Voltron: The 3rd Dimension. That one was cheesy, but fun if you liked that era of CGI toons. Suffice to say, the franchise has been kept alive. It might not have the biggest fan base, but it definitely has followers from multiple generations.

The Netflix reboot was really good, had quite a bit of lore, and actually provides really solid examples of what the Voltron riders would actually look like as an adventuring party.

Basically, the show felt like it was based on an already existing RPG.

Looks like I need to hunt down the Netflix series for an update :)

Yeah, I love that series! Watched the whole thing through three times. I hope the RPG uses it.
