They Changed FIREBALL?

Very good.

Now, can you show me where I say that my opinion does represent the majority, or where I even mention Vancian casting?

Because you said "You may not like the magic system, but many of us do." So the implication there is that he's in the minority in his opinion.

Also, the person you quoted was talking ABOUT the magic system in D&D. Which is Vanican.

This thread (at least the original post) is hilarious. I remember this same thread from the days when we were anticipating third edition D&D. Charwoman Gene, was that you that posted that thread back in 2000 also? Or was it someone else? I'm a little scared that I actually remember that thread from seven years ago. At first I thought the OP in that thread years ago was joking/trolling, and maybe he was, but he was so vehement in fury over the pellet sized fireball. Others tried to explain that this was the way fireball worked even in the previous edition, but that OP wanted none of it.

Somebody gets it! Hooray!

You ACTUALLY win teh thread.

The Original OP was Sonofapreacherman, and had apparently never READ the 1/2E Fireball Spell. Anyone who is trying to be serious in this thread? GET OFF MY LAWN! :]

I believe that Son Of A Preacher Man (AKA SOAPMan) was the poster most excited by the "fireball pellet" debates

Well, you are making some assumptions there that aren't neccessarily true...

Firstly, when did "many" automatically equal "most"? I certainly didn't intend it that way, I was simply stressing that not everyone out there wants the existing magic system done away with. I'm not going to argue percentages or margins, as I don't have the hard data to back this up.

Secondly, only part of the current D&D magic system is Vancian. Technically, only Wizards (and to a lesser Degree, Clerics and Druids), are Vancian. Socerers, Bards and all the other spontaneous casters really aren't following an especially Vancian method of casting. Have you read Vance's works? They discuss pre-memorizing specific spells until your brain simply cannot hold any more. Not much at all like spontaneous casting. And the fact is there are a lot more base classes out there in 3.5 that are spontaneous than those that have to memorise.

...anyway, my point was never "I like it this way, so nothing should change!" it was more along the lines of "Hey, some of us like it the way it is, don't sweep our opinions under the rug altogether!". ;)

That's right, Sonofapreacherman was the poster... I remember now. His posts on the fireball spell were at once disturbingly silly and nonsensical, and yet inspiringly passionate. Thank you, Charwoman Gene, for bringing that old silly passion back to us on these boards. In these times of change and uncertainty between editions, it is comforting to know some remember the ancient times of 3e's beginnings.

The Vancian Magic System is what makes Dungeons and Dragons Dungeons and Dragons. It is a recognizable core aspect of the game that sets it apart from other RPGs. Don't like the Vancian system? Go play the dozen or so RPGs that don't use it.

Keep DnD DnD.
