Those DND minis

old wargamer here: since when is $1.25 cheap for a mini?

at one point in the not too distant past i had more lead minis than dice. (believe me that is saying a lot)

i started wargamer before i ever played D&D.

i averaged $0.12 per mini. i even cast my own at one point. but after reading about the hazards of waste disposal i stopped. :o (hey i was a kid then)

if my minis are worth $1.25 at least a piece now i'm filthy stinking rich. :happydance:

i know what i'm doing for retirement plans.

Picked up a pack at lunchtime today. I got Jozan, Krusk, a hyena, a goblin sneak, a dwarf axe fighter, a bandit, an elf w/bow, and a shambling mound. The shambling mound is easily the best looking out of the pack - heck, it's just green and brown, so the simple color scheme works for it. I think there may have been some drybrushing on it (it's not in front of me - in the car), so that makes it stand out a bit. The others range from "okay" (Jozan) to "ugh" (the elf with the mold line and some of the paint rubbed off). I think either Jozan or the bandit will be the first to get a new paint job, w/before and after pics - hopefully by early next week.

I'll agree with what's been said before - these minis will be good for people who have neither the time nor the inclination to paint their own. They're certainly recognizable and serviceable as-is, and the price is right. Just don't expect too much.

Getting specific minis together (like 10 ogres) is tough to do though, because they are rare. Trading either at your game store or online (like at http://www.maxminis.com ) seems like the easiest way to get 'em. WOTC is going to release non-random warbands next year, but only a couple of creature types will be in them (at least for now)

When they stopped making them out of lead. Sorry, bro.

Personally, I won't be picking up the D&D minis. This is nothing against the line. Its just that if I'm going to buy minis I'm going to expand my Warhammer collection.

I just picked up 2 packs at lunch and are very happy with them. They meet my expectation and are a good value. 16 mini's for 10 bucks is a good buy. Are the paint jobs great, no, but most of them are not horrible.

I love to paint, don't particulrly like painting orcs, goblins and the like. I also don't have a lot of time for painting and paint slowly. The human minis will be great for common thugs and NPCs, the mosters will work, well, as monsters and I really liked the undead because I hate painting them.

Two thumbs up from your local toe. I will probably buy one pack a month.

The set WotC sent me did come in handy in the last game. There were enough humanoid-ish shaped ones to use as thugs, but enough non-humanoidish (mostly dog or lizard-ish shapes) to use as giant rats, ankhegs, etc. And since they're not little fragile works of art, I didn't feel bad chucking a handful of them down on the table in one go. :)

This is not to be underestimated. I would feel much more comfortable carrying these in large quantities to games away from home than I would with my painted minis. Many people often get caught up in combat and like to knock around the minis like they were old star wars action figures.

Yup, and I'll be able to let my 5 yr old play with them without hovering over him and getting all jittery.

These are the exact same reasons I will be getting some of these mins. I have dozens upon dozens of unpainted minis lying in boxes upstairs. If I live to be 200 I might be able to get them all painted! Having some cheap (yes diaglo - $1.25 is dirt cheap for pre-painted minis, welcome to 1990 - hopefully we'll get you familiar with 2003 pricing when you recover from the shock ;) ) painted minis that will look good on the table top and be easy to distinguih from each other is a god send to me.
