Hearing a lot of praise for the art in this edition, but so far, other than the covers, I am a bit underwhelmed.

Of the PHB preview art, my favorite is the opening page of the PHB. Not a fan of the rest we have seen or the direction the art in 5E seems to be taking.

I have to disagree, I rather like the tiefling picture, more so than the dwarf.

But they're really playing up the alien appearance, aren't they? Big horns, 4 ft tail, solid colored eyes.

That completely misses the point of the classic 2e and 3e tieflings, replacing them with something using their name but apparently based completely on the 4e creature from Evans' novel. That's a shame.

I gotta say, I was hoping for a subrace that was more variable in appearance. I never really played much Planescape, but I like the idea of perhaps a more chaotic demonic rather than lawful devil breed, one that may or may not have a tail, etc. but still bears some obvious signs of infernal influence.

Of course this doesn't include the presumed subrace options, but the general description there seems to say all tieflings share the same baseline template.

Agree, art is cool. Agree, its the 4E one, and the 4E one I had as PC wasn't even the 4E one, at least flavour wise. Mechanics aside, would be nicer to see a wider range of origins.

This is the first 5E art I'm not a fan of.

I like the CONCEPT behind the piece, I'm just not enthused about the brushstrokes being so plainly visible. It seems messy and unclear instead of the crispness I've grown used to.

ETA: Looks like they've gone with the 4E fluff.
