Time needed to rear an animal

I am fairly new to being a ranger and trying the handle animal skill. I want to rear animals either as a living or for fun to have many minions if i can. one problem, I can't seem to figure out how long it will take me to rear an animal. My DM is also very unfamiliar with this and has no Idea. The book only states that at the half way point you roll a DC check to see if you fail. Does anyone know how to figure out the time taken to rear the animal? In particular i want to rear a medium viper snake. real life time seems like it would take for ever to rear some animals. also i am playing Eberron campaign if that makes a difference. :\

For the most part, it's not specified in the rules just like it's not (usually) specified what hatches, what's born, and what reproduces by binary fission. Like all such, it's a DM judgment call.

Most large domestic animals are viable by 1 year and fully functional by 3

I had a gnome who raised a herd of giant carnivorous hamsters which I treated as 'dogs' for the purposes of making easy rulings

Smaller animals tend to have shorter lifespans and thus grow more quickly however I have no idea how long a viper would take.

Many people have been saying to look up the lifespan of the animal. though some snakes take 6 years to reach sexual maturity. that seems like a really like time in game and was hoping to find evidence for my DM to have a shorter thing. i was hoping 6 months. that would be nice. thanks for the help.

also for anyone who may be looking for an answer i got this from someone.

"If you want your snake to act as armor...:):):):) if I know. You'd need some kind of freaky enchantment on it, like that cat-armor from some anime the name of which I've forgotten.

For it to attack people, you'd probably need a Handle Animals check.

And to answer the original question, what kind of snake is it? Constrictor or venomous?

Looking at a Burmese python, which can reach weights of about 200 pounds (appropriate for a M-size creature), it looks like it'll take it approximately 4 years to grow to its adult size, and have a full lifespan of around 20 years. You should be able to have it trained well enough to not try to eat you within maybe a year or two.

Venomous snakes in the real world tend to be much smaller, but I would think that a venomous Medium snake would probably have a similar life-cycle...though you might want to keep a cleric around until you get it trained, as some venomous snake species can and will bite shortly after birth."

I think that there are no "times" listed because rearing an animal is not something a PC can readily do.

What I mean is that since you are rearing it from infancy that means you are totally taking care of it and that it can't take care of itself for an extended period of time. So the PC in question must no give up adventuring for the entire duration of the "rearing", unlike those with specific times which require 3 hrs/day of constant attention.

So IMO rearing an animal is a background thing and something mostly reserved for NPCs.
