To Prestige or not to Prestige

PrCs are not necessarely the way to go. I have a PC who has even dropped his prestige class after a fewlevel because it didn't fit him well anymore.

He is a wizard who went master alchemist (FRCS), but when he inherited a tower and became senator, he just sought something more. He's now gonna take 2 levels i wizard to getthe requirements for, you guest it, Archmage...

In the language of a UN Resolution:

Agreeing with many about the idea of character concept not always needing to take a prestige class...

Disagreeing with some about overpower Archmage. You do indeed sacrifice a feat (Skill Focus: Spellcraft) that you would have been unlikely to take in most character progressions.

Pointing out to many that the Incantatrix may well be the overpowered Archtype. Improved Metamagic is INSANELY useful and powerful. It changes the dynamic of the game completly. Sure, you give up a spell school to get it, but if you wern't already specialized it is no big deal, and if you were you still have access to the lower level spells of that type that you already knew. My wizard is playing one now, and he's just nuts. All die before him. And of course, when he exhausts Incantatrix, he's taking Archmage.

I'm sorry but while it takes LONGER to get to Archmage, if you wait until 12 level, you'll be FAR greater in power than MOST mages in other Pr-classes. Incantrix is about the only other one that compares and THAT is certainly fairly broken in some respects.

thanks for the link, Rodrigo!

it's an interesting PrC, i'll read up on it later. i just checked the requirements and i'm a ways off. the biggest problem for my PC is "the Nagris artificer must undergo five months of intense training." my group couldn't live without me for that long! :D

I've been there three seasons and so far we';ve done just fine without you. All you do is come downstairs, grab some oatmeal, and then go back up to the fourth floor where we aren't allowed to go. If it wasn't for the stories the others tell me I'd think you are something other then an archmage!! :D

Just kidding of course, well sort of ;)

Both of these classes are just fine. It's in my experieince that prestige classes get "broken" when players try and are allowed to break them. Any class can become "broken" if players are aloowed to abuse the system.

Well while I agree in THEORY Crothy, it's in practice that I've noticed this happening more often. Course I played with a bunch of munckins, I guess I'm just jaded BECAUSE that's just about how they'd finish out a level.

See, in my practice I've seen many prestige classes used (both of the ones in the above example) and none have ever proved unbalanced.
