Not something I learned today, but did you know the threaded metal screw dates back to 1775? And was being mass-produced by 1798 or so?
I discovered this when trying to ID the ACW-era rifle bayonet I acquired several years ago - the fact that it had a threaded metal screw in it blew my mind.

TIL- literally- that Jains are lacto-vegetarians, and because of their extreme commitment to non-violence, they will not eat root veggies.

This came up because a second (yes, second) Indian owned pizzeria opened in our neighborhood, and there’s a large section of the menu that is based on Jain cuisine. Each such section notes “(No onion/garlic)”.

I thought to myself, "How many Jainist could there be in the United States?" And the answer is between 150,000-200,000. More than I expected but a teeny, tiny minority here in the US.

Guess the Lobster Lobby and Garlic Butter Marketing Boards should be congratulated.

Middle of winter outside at night in a t shirt and vest. Wife's bundled up in an overcoat and hat.

6 degrees Celsius not sure what the problem was. Car to bar to supermarket.
