Tokiwong's 3.5 Game: Chapter 1 (The Swarm)

Kerrik wrinkles his nose in distaste as he exits Old Yurt's. Any time some local warns you about the smell, you know you're in trouble.

Still, Kerrik led his pack mule, named Fireball, away from the old man's place of business. He had also bought several day's worth of food for the beast as well. Kerrik stables the animal at the inn for a night before walking around Green Hills, taking in the sights.

Kerrick

The village of Green Hills, is for the most part a quiet place, at the center of the village is a large cobble stoned circle, with fountain. The fountain depicts a beautiful maiden carrying a jug over her shoulder, from which the water spills out into the fountain.

The pace of the village seems invariably slow, and the populace tends to close up shop and head home. The guards are few in the village, and most people just Kerrick a look, already recognizing a stranger in their midst, but they pay him no mind. Life it seems is just much slower out here in the borderlands, far from the hustle and bustle of the central Empire.

The Next Morning

September 17th in the 782nd year of the Empire

The adventurers set out early the next morning. The sun had barely begun to peak over the edge of the eastern horizon when they had put the village a few leagues behind them on the road towards Mount Arthrof, which even at three days away seemed to loom in the horizon obscured by early morning mist, and the lazy drifting of clouds. Thankfully even if it were not for the trail, Jalban seems to have a pretty good grasp of the geography of the region, no doubt to his travels, and association with other travelers and woodsmen.

OOC: Thanks to the successful Knowledge Geography check he receives a +2 competency bonus to all Survival checks for the duration of the adventure or for however long he stays in the region, or until death…

The first day of travel is pretty easy through the rolling hills, and eventually the smell and the sights of the herds give way to a smattering of pine trees, as the terrain becomes more rugged. The party makes camp at the end of the first day, of boring uneventful travel, and the night was equally slow, with the howls of night creatures and the sounds of the natural world their only companions…

On the second day of travel the party sets out once again, and the hilly terrain turns rocky and steep by mid-afternoon, with the pine trees growing thicker, as the trail meanders through the looming forest. Overhead rolling fluffy clouds pass on a soft breeze, bringing the scent of pine to your noses.

As late afternoon looms, Jalban catches the scent of smoke, thankfully not a wildfire, but perhaps a campfire. Looking ahead there seems to be an encampment about sixty feet ahead where the trail dips downward, before it continues back upwards towards the looming peak of Mount Arthrof, and the surrounding mountain range.

OOC: Jalban rolls a spot check of 16 total, the rest of the party was all below 10, and so we can skip them. He can make out three figures in the encampment, and three tents. The three figures look to be dwarves, and they have two pack animals with them. They seem to be talking amongst themselves and have not noticed the party.

Drakor leans in close Jalban and whispers “I can’t make out a durned thing, me eyes always seem to fail me in the waining hours of the day. Can you see anything?”

Bjorn comes to the front of the party, "I have some modest skills as a diplomat. Would you like me to inquire of the Dwarves?"
OOC: Bjorn has not seen the dwarves yet, they are hidden behind a tree-line the dip, jagged rocks, and the like, Jalban made the Spot Check a low DC but he made it... he is the only one to really see anything, the rest can just see the faint smoke from the fire... if that clears thinsg up :)

OOC: Sorry. Bjorn's oblivious.

Noting that He can't notice anything beyond the fact that there is a fire,Jason looks to the restMaybe we should go ahead and see if our fellow travelers may have some word about what lays ahead.

Meanwhile up on Mount Arthrof

September 18th, in the 782nd year of the Empire

“Cenkil, Moradin would be proud with our progress this day, by tomorrow morn we should be close to where ye father had found the mine,” the lean dwarf spoke as he scratched at his beard.

“Aye Niefeld, father would be proud. Liff get the rest of them to setup camp over there,” Cenkil pointed off behind some rocks, “and be quick about it ye lout, no wasting time staring at the bleeding stars.”

Liff sighed, and fought back the urge to give his brother a rude gesture and waved for his fellows to follow, “Aye, lets get to work fellow, we gots much to do, and little time to do it in, I be tired, and need some rest.”

In the waning light and darkness, a large spider skittered across a rock. Gray with blue mottled spots, it had a bulbous body, and large mandibles for cutting and tearing. Just out of sight of the dwarves, its eyes watching them carefully as it crept back into growing shadows…

Kerrik was never as tired as he was now. His fellow adventurer's kept quite a pace, and Fireball, his pack mule, wasn't exactly cooperating nicely. There had better be a lot of treasure at the end of this journey. Why don't the stories ever mention how much walking you have to do in this life? I mean, they just suddenly appear at Dragon Mountain and attack the kobolds. I can't wait until I am of sufficient arcane might to Teleport. As if that will ever happen...

It will happen! Still, nice scenery here.
Kerrik's internal monologue is interrupted when he slams into the back of Drakor. Sorry...hey, why'd we stop? Kerrik notices the smoke, and he smiles.

Fellow traveller's eh? Or goblins, or bandits. Or someone with good food. Best to be careful before we check things out. Instinctively, Kerrik recalls the arcane words and gestures to bring up a defensive force armor. His irises turn red as he moves his left arm in a circular motion, reciting the Draconic words Magis arma

OOC: Casting Mage Armor, decided to embellish a bit.
