Tolkien v. Howard v. Lovecraft

D20 is like gaming heroin, once you get hooked on it, you can't imagine your gaming life without it. Addicts. ADDICTS, I tell you! Ya hate the pusher but you need the drug :)

Not entirely true; I rather enjoyed our stint with Paranoia and SAS. But the point remains, I do not play DnD and I do enjoy Conan.

Off the subject, I have also ordered Iron Heroes and Grim Tales to look at. They both change the magic system of d20, which is where I see the problem to lie; levels and such do not bother me. Iron Heroes apparently makes fighters able to stand toe-to-toe with DnD monsters without magic. Grim Tales also has its take on things.

I can't believe we extended this conversation out for three pages between three people.

Oh yes. We can churn out the words.

We apparently bored everyone else away. Although, I don't think Bob has been checking the boards, or we might have gone to five or six pages...

Well, I simply despise Christian evangelising and don't expect Clerics to act in that manner.

I just want to say that for the record, I am in the same boat with you on this. I just read a story yesterday where the Air Force chaplains had an unofficial policy that while they agreed not to try to evangelize those who already had faith beliefs, it was open season on those who did not express a preference.

Because, you see, evangelizing is such a component of some denominations that a chaplain from that denomination just HAD to evangelize to the heathens. So if I am some atheist young airman, I would have to put up with captains and colonels and what have you laying down the word of God on me. How would THAT not be coercion?

And how long would it be before the "nonchurched" included those who were nominally Jewish or Muslim but essentially non-practicing? And with the rank differential, how long before that evangelizing became less of a voluntary thing and more of an order? "You will attend 9 a.m. services Sunday, airman!" What a load.

And I honestly had a point as to how this tied back to my original suggestion, but now I forget what it was. Methinks I may need some caffeine.

I think a system that does away with class and level would be very interesting. I could see just a big book of things you could choose from via spending EXP or something to that degree. I think Rolemaster might play like that somewhat...

Hey guys. I just wanted to pop in and say that this thread is waaay too much for me to read, absorb, and reply to at work. Expect some stuff from me Sunday since we're playing Conan on Saturday (hopefully - see the thread about it).

I just wanted to pop in here and say that Iron Heroes and Grim Tales are good choices for what Vince is looking for in "DND". I also have the ENPublishing alternate magic system books IM. I'll let you borrow them.
