Top 100 Quintessential Gamers Movies (Fantasy)

Actually My Guidelines are limited to any movie worth its weight that has a fantasy element, is historical (or pseudohistorical, braveheart should be on that list), or is pure fantasy for whatever reason, and because a few (Gnomemobile, Marry Poppins, and Bed Knobs and Broomsticks to be exact are movies I loved as a child that made me love the mystical side of the universe.

So the intention was for every one to post their own list or to add to mine with movies they thought that belonged there. I am only leaving out LoTR and Harry potter because those are Easy targets and would bog the lists of everyone who entered provided I didn't say forget them for the moment.

Honestly I have been leaving Puff the Magic Dragon off the list for fear of everyones laughter

If you don't mind some more animated titles, I'd add Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Laputa, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Howl's Moving Castle, Escaflowne, and Weathering Continent (limiting myself to just films).

A Knights Tale being tied for first made me stop reading right there.

If that is what you consider one of the best gamer movies...I think we just have different tastes. I found A Knights Tale to be one of the worst movies in the last decade that I actually paid for, though I know others differ. Still, tied for first?

Here are some that I liked:

The Name of the Rose
Ben-Hur
Spartacus
Seven Samurai
The NeverEnding Story
The Goonies
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

I'd replace "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves" with better versions of the Robin Hood story. Errol Flynn's Robin Hood or perhaps Douglas Fairbank's silent version.

A few of random films to throw out:
Flatliners
The Name of the Rose
The Big Sleep

I assume you've not included Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies intentionally?

Star Wars for obvious reasons is not included, and I am hesitant on Indianna Jones films (I am a complete and total fan, and if the question was what should you have in your collection both would be there)

As for A Knights Tale being the worst film of the century that is inconceivable to quote another great movie from the list...opinions do vary I suppose, but even my comedy critical father liked it and that is saying something.

Goonies is a great movie, I love it a lot...that said I avoided it for the same reason as Indy, or Lara Croft or National Treasure or the Librarian, or ....etc those brands of adventure movies are for the most part good movies ( I own most of those listed). Out of them all Goonies is the most likely to make this list. I don't know maybe we should vote on each on to get the comprehensive list or something.

So to make ammends,

50. The Land That Time Forgot

Notice this list attempts at keeping to pure fantasy element ( with some like the land that time forgot, and Reign of Fire for example set in contemporary periods or near future settings.

Hmmm, withouth strong criteria it is hard to create a list.

Is this simply "Films that I like that feel a bit geek-worthy?" Is this "Movies that worked their way into my rpgs?" Is this "Films that are liked by the same people who like rpgs?"

Once some limits are placed, then I can create my own list or critique yours. ;)

Oh well

Here goes nothing

Criteria

1. Must be pure fantasy, or have a strong fantasy element
Ammendment 1. Psuedohistorical, or all out historical movies work to provided they are in a midevial, classic, dark age period or otherwise comparable to a fantasy setting.

2. Must have an influence on gaming, I.E. it gets you in the mood to play, or it has affected a game, or it gave you a great concept for a character you have played.

3. No Science fiction please that is for a different list. (Star Wars is not fantasy, despite the elements present in it)

4. No listing the easy movies (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter)

5. Must be a relatively good movie, or one that effected you personally. (That is why for me listing things like Hawk the Explorer, and Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon is kind of difficult)

Other than that it can be a Fantasy/ drama, Comedy or whatever provided that it meets those criteria.
