Topic tags disappear when you edit the thread's first post

Several times, especially lately, I have been mildly frustrated by the fact that when you edit a post, the topic tag you originally chose (if any) disappears unless you specifically re-select that tag. When I edit a post I nearly always forget to do this.

Is it possible to reconfigure things so that when you edit a post, any topic tags remain by default?

We like to think of that as a feature, not a bug -- but the inestimable Spoony Bard hasn't yet had time to / figured out how to fix it, and *I* sure don't know how.
