Towards a Grittier d20 Trek!

I'm working on the captain and the others (Gilligan, Ginger, you know the lot) and one thing I I hope comes about is a clear vision of the captain's curious nature. Sure, he's a greedy bastard, but he's an insanely curious greedy bastard.

Grit does not imply he wouldn't see this little ship as important... maybe even critical at some point in the future.

He let something important slip away once before, long before he realized her... I mean... its importance. He won't do that again.

Like that time at Min'shara...

Heres the reformatted scout.

I think you need to add the Starship Operation: Ultralight feat for Hope (or she'll take -4 to pilot checks). Also, some detail on it's weapons and defensive systems should be known since it's been seen in combat (vs Bandits). Nimal would study the Wanderer's sensor logs on the Heisenberg studiously. :D

The Heisenberg
Hope's ship is of an unknown and very alien origin. Made of some sort of bio-metal, it seems to be somewhat sentient, able to repair itself and it occasionally acts on it's own strange whims. What is known that it is incredibly old, perhaps even older than the Wanderer.

Engineer Notes

Drives:
Indeterminant power source
Still trying to work how it operates.
So far it has shown to have a cruising speed of Warp 3
Sublight drive? Working on it....

Armor:
Unknown. Bio-metal of some sort or another. Regenerative properties.

Defensive systems:
Unknown. I don't want to irritate it enough to find out

Sensors
Unknown.

Weapons:
Unknown

Communications:
Drive Transceiver (recognizable, but oddly configured)
Internal Comms (Still don't know how that works)

Alien Origins
The crew found this ship after detecting a strange distress call in a rather empty bit of space. It allowed itself to be towed into a docking bay and lowered a gangplank of its own volition (they later found that out). After a subsequent search of the ship, they found one lone occupant in some sort of stasis tube. When they approached, the ship activated the tube and revived the occupant, who was found to be from the late 20th or early 21st century Earth. The ship has occasionally revived, once to help fight off bandits and another to rescue Hope from being taken from the Wanderer by some rather unscruplous scientists. In both incidients it has displayed a distressing amount of sentience.

hi. sorry to interupt, but is this an open thread? do you want feedback on anything? [everything?] can anyone participate?

I am just finding this to be a VERY interesting idea, but I feel clueless about the context from which it emerged [like is it a spin-off from another thread?]

thanks for any info...enjoying the discussion!

a. Totally Open.

b. The Context is that of a netbook for d20 adventures in the Star Trek Universe played not from a Starfleet perspective, but from the deck of a ship full of mercenaries, pirates or puppy-kickin' layabouts.

Excellent thanks.
I was thinking that she could take that feat at first opportunity. After all, even if she does have the knowledge planted in her brain, it would still take some practice/time for her muscles, reflexes and whatnot to get used to piloting and that would work for the other knowledge the ship planted in her brain. I mean, there is a difference between knowing how something works and actually working it.

As far as defensive capabilities/weaponry, maybe you could help me on that? I don't really know that much about star-trek technology. Other than the fact that the holodec and the transporter array malfunctions every ten episodes.

Oh. Where did you get the different kinds of metal alloys?
And could you email me a copy of the netbook or what you have? That would be great!

I would say keep the psionic classes as shown in the d20 modern handbook. In the show, powerful psionic people are pretty rare, even if the lesser psionic abilities (telepathy, empathy and so on) are fairly common. So the psionic classes reflect that.

ok, so my 2 cents...

the psionic classes don't work if you're going by Trek canon. I cannot think of any single character who fits that template at all. I think Raven Crowking and Jephkay sorta hit on it right when they made certain Psionic talents Extraordinary racial abilities. I think this fits the model much better than using the classes.

I always preferred the Feat+Skill structure of the Star Wars d20 system, the Call of Cthulhu d20 system and the Psychic's Handbook. I'd recommend simply allowing a Racially-based Feat on the order of:

Vulcan Mind Meld: Allows Vulcan characters to be trained in Mild Meld techniques

Then either provide one skill or several to define specific uses of the Mind Meld. I could totally see Mind Meld being a WISDOM-based skill, with various uses having a specific base DC to perform. Thus, Spock can use his Mind Meld to commune with an unknown alien, alter his friend's memories to make him forget something traumatic, or use it to implant his "soul" into another friend. Each specific power [for lack of a better term] would thus be a different use of the extraordinary ability.

It should be easy to list these things out, and it should also be fairly easy then for any GM to whip up a DC on the fly.

I'd also suggest manufacturing a generic psionics system for use with new races, mutants, or to provide to genetically engineered beings [like the exemplar Hope Strange Child] to accommodate player innovation.

I don't know...I have never been happy with how most systems adapted for use to TV and movies dealt with Psionics, and I figured this might be a good way to toss out an idea.

Any thoughts?

Jephkay, did you get the file I sent you?

Yes I did. Sorry I did not reply earlier. I've not finished going over it, but it looks great!

Definately porting over the races. As mentioned before, the Major Races (Humans, Klingons, Bajorans, Vulcans, Romulans, Ferengi and a few others (Vote?)) in the front, lesser races back in the friends and foes section.

Instead of just reprinting the d20 Modern base classes, I thought we'd present each one with something like "Strong Heroes in Trek" and discuss in what Trek-ish roles you find them. Some are pretty obvious, but I hope to bring new ideas... Tough Engineer seems interesting. Using my occupations additions, I think we'll be able to pull off "Dedicated Security"

To sum up, your file is awesome, and will be used extensively... with your permission... we'd only discussed races, really, but there are other things in there that I want. I'll make a list.
