Towards a Grittier d20 Trek!

Lol. I still say once we got this thing figured out we need to playtest it. ;)

Hmm. We don't have a shrink character ala Deanna Troi or a copilot either.

I shall gather my notes, and get ta typin' ... so far, I've just been scribbling in my notebook, hoping to "Layer" my notes into a Modern/Future Blended SRD. I'll post something soon.

As far as Psionics goes, hit me... I'll look it over, I'm sure I'll be as jazzed as I have by everything else I've read.

BTW: Myth, we need an Iconic Trek character from ya for the Wanderer crew. Every series has it's iconic characters, We have our Sciences, Security, Engineer and (sorta) Medical... we need a pilot and maybe... I dunno... chef, doctor, or hanger-on... perhaps a character with lots of contacts... a "Face" charismatic type. Maybe the captain's girlfriend... someone for Hope to hate and T'Lyss to be confounded by.

Pilot. Captain's Girl.... that's a good combo... don't name her Starbuck tho. OOH! The Captain's Ex-Wife... that'd be a hoot!

Or you could write whatever you like... I'm still working on the captain. He's gotta be just right

haha...I was thinking of contributing something along these lines... But why would the ex-wife be on the ship? Lemme think it over. I was thinking of doing a Betazoid Charismatic with that "Trader" background you suggested earlier on.

Oh, and I'm not fond of Starbuck, so you won't be seeing anything similar from me. ;-)

Perhaps a cross between Zhaan from Farscape and Roslin from BSG, just more "vampy." Those are more along the lines of the characters I usually play/make well.

Lemme think a bit more and I'll toss up something.

Hmmm.
Maybe make her sorta like Deana's mother? She's pretty fun and vixen enough. And I could readily see her being a scoundrel type too.

The Nerve Pinch feat is pretty difficult to learn. Takes Martial Arts training and a base attack bonus most Modern classes wont have until level 6  Maybe add a STR score prereq? 17-20?

Want me to hit ya, Jeph? Okay, will plunk some drafts down tomorrow.

What's wrong with Starbuck? She's hotter than the first one, IMHO ;) A wise, worldy Zhaan/Roslin with the mature appeal of Bev Crusher would be a nice addition.

I am currently running with an idea best described as one part Lwaxana, one-part Chianna (from Farscape). Those are the best pop culture scifi examples I can think of at the moment.

Going Charismatic 3/ Swindler 3

Here's my current interpretation of Betazoid Telepathy.
What are the problems with it? [There must be some--possible range penalties for long distance empathy/mind reading?]

Betazoid Telepathy [Racial Feat]: Through their natural telepathic senses, Betazoids can detect sentient minds at a distance. At a range of 1 mile, a Betazoid can sense the presence of sentient life. The nature of this sentient life can be discerned with an appropriate Knowledge check.

More precise information can be acquired from a sentient mind through the use of Sense Motive rolls [T_M note: should this be a seperate skill perhaps?]. On a DC 10 roll, a Betazoid can sense the emotional state of a targeted creature, and on a DC 15, the target creature’s surface thoughts can be discerned. On a DC 20, the Betazoid can discern a secret piece of information hidden in the sentient mind [T_M note: I don't like the wording of the DC 20 aspect].

This telepathic sense is usually limited to within line of sight, but if a Betazoid can pinpoint a target creature’s position up to one mile away [T_M note: haven't Deanna and Lwaxana both read minds on a planet's surface when they were in orbit though?], that mind can still read. Betazoid Telepathy cannot normally be opposed [GMs may allow characters with Iron Will or Telepathy to be allowed a Will roll to resist].

[oops...forgot the add something...

my idea is that knowing someone's emotional state, or surface thoughts, or secret would give some sort of perk, usually a circumstance bonus to an interaction roll--how would this be adjudicated? I am trying to make this SEPERATE from the Dedicated Hero's Empathy talent, so maybe just give a blanket +4 bonus as in the other systems (e.g. Farscape and d20 Star Wars)?]

Mara Du’enn- Betazoid Trader

Name: Mara Du’enn
Species: Betazoid
Occupation: Scavenger turned Trader/Merchant
Allegiances: Herself, her crewmates, her friends, her business associates (in that order)

Mara never got along well in Betazoid society. In a culture that thrives on truthfulness and open exchange, Mara was secretive and manipulative. She learned at an early age how to hide her thoughts from her telepathic kin through sheer force of will, which made her something of an oddity among her own kind.

When she was old enough, Mara hitched a ride off Betazed on a Denobulan freighter. Hoping to find greener pastures, the freighter actually dropped her off on some Gods-forbidden rock. Developing a knack for salvaging sellable materials from junk, Mara made the best of it until she convinced another freighter captain to take her back to civilization. Since then, it’s been one jaunt after another as she’s charmed, flirted, traded, and conned man after man across the Alpha Quadrant. Mara’s acquired quite a talent at getting merchandise, information, and just about anything else she needs (or wants) from the men she encounters. It’s been quite an interesting life…but of course that had to change.

How the Hell Mara just ended up on the same ship as her ex-lover is beyond insane. They met ten years ago when he was stationed on a Starbase. Mara was working with a Ferengi merchant who needed access to some Starfleet intel, and she was hired to find a way to access it. The Captain was just a Lieutenant Commander at the time, and he turned out to be quite an easy mark. Mara felt a little bad using him, but he was a rather good lay. Poor sap seemed totally oblivious that he was just her plaything for the month they spent together.

That the chump is the Captain of the ship that just rescued her after the transport she was on had a reactor leak just proves the universe is out to get her. Of course, she always did think he was kind of hot. And he *is* Captain of the Wanderer now. And the ship does seem to be doing some interesting stuff. Since she’s been told they can’t drop her off at a Starbase any time soon, maybe Mara will stick around for awhile and see what develops.

Ihave thought about the PbP thingie... I'm pretty sure it'd work... my schedule is very rigid, leave for work at 7 am Indianapolis Time, get home at 6 pm. No work on weekends, except I'm DMing Slaughterguard from 4-9 on Saturdays. Other than that, I'm open.

I even know what kinda plot I'd run... :]

Well the best thing about PbP is that it works really well with crazy schedules, plus unlike chatroom based games, you don't have to coordinate with anyone. ;)

If you do decide to run a game, I'd be happy to be the strung out, burned out, stim addicted(amphetamine, uppers, whatever is the illicit ST "concentration" drug of choice) ex-starfleet pilot/co-pilot.
