D&D General Transitioning Campaign Style

I once transitioned from a standard heroic fantasy to a mercenary, "are we the bad guys here?" style campaign. That was pretty much based on the kinds of characters the players had rather than anything I actively did to shape the campaign. I set up for a campaign where the PCs were the good guys and they all mostly wanted to be murderhobos. So I started looking at stuff like Glen Cook's The Black Company for inspiration. But that was merely a matter of changing my game to be more stylistically like what my players wanted. One thing I would say is that it's important for there to be some continuity between the old style and the new. Unless there's an active desire to wipe the slate clean, events from the old style should carry forward as much as is possible into the new.
