I haven't had any trolls in my campaign yet but when I do I'll probably make them more like mythological, LoTR style trolls. I don't like D&D trolls.

I'm fond of the Iron Kingdoms trolls myself.

Those are kind of cool. More like ogres though. Still I likem.

I typically use the Green Rubber Longnose variety and the myriad variants thereof.

I always liked the Warhammer RPG's troll but mostly use the standard MM.

Iron Kingdoms' troll is very interesting but see them as a mis-named orge (as Jester47 said).

Salutations,

In my last campeign, trolls were created by dwarven wizards mutating dwarf criminals. Food is scarce in the world- so they created a source of "endless" food and a cruel punishment.

Over time, some escaped, but are long deranged- they were the serial killer types in that campeign.

In the previous campeign, they originated from elves attempting to become closer to a dragon god. Ritual scarification and magical rites warped them against nature- they no longer could heal at all in daylight. It was pretty much a religous caste- that had outlasted the rest of their people. (Elves being long gone in that campeign.)

I've actually had a hard times with trolls because EVERY SINGLE PLAYER knows how to kill the Monster Manual/Poal Anderson version of a troll. I don't use the Tolkien ones either, but I have used the turn-to-stone thing before with trolls and other creatures of the night. I've also done the living-under-a-bridge too, but only in the right campaign and under the right circumstances.

I've also customized trolls though. I've added special little touches to them to make them something the PCs have never faced. I also had the commoners spin stories before, thus building trolls to frightening power, then had the trolls follow the party just to scare them to no end. It's all very fun when you throw the party a curve ball.

My Trolls come in several flavors

Most of them are of the Nordic varieties, Basically BMU's (Big Mean Uglies) They do not regenerate

There are other sorts of trolls including Bridge Trolls which are smart and hate goats (No I am not joking) Abomination Trolls (big green Monster Manual standard) and other sorts

Some of these critters can breed with humans though I don't have a half troll race as yet

I use most of the trolls from the 3E MM and from the old Fiend Folio (although after seeing their treatment in the new Tome of Horrors from Necrmancer Games I will have to convert to them! Very well done indeed). I love trolls and giants as monsters.

Two of the most deadly (and exciting) battles in my campaign involved trolls and giants (with the leaders having ranks in fighter or barbarian - raging trolls and giants are just hideous!).

Another great troll variant is the one from Creature Collection 2 called the Gaurak Troll - it is always ravenously hungry and quite powerful - if it downs an opponent it will stop attacking to eat him! Nasty little critter.

Oh and Elfquest trolls rock! I love that series.
