Mine are the kind that get flame wars started on message boards...Bugaboo trolls................. or maybe just the mm version, it depends on the day.

IMC I use MM trolls stat-wise, but use Vecna's description from D&DG for their appearance. This way, my players know to just run, which saves me the trouble of keeping track of regenerating hit points.

My players all wonder why Vecna is always hiding under bridges and getting high off apples, but because I'm not using the Greyhawk pantheon, they don't have a base to research it in character.

Which is good. If they found out these were just Planetars (that's what I call trolls IMC) they would probably get confused.

Hmm.. this has been interesting reading. In my homebrew Shatterd World campaign I so far have used the basic Troll stats from the PHB. But reading other people's ideas I have realised that the origin of Trolls for this world is that they are hybrid Goblin-Orcs. I have a fair few types of each race, and modified the Goblins to be magically-blooded. The regenerative power of the Troll fits nicely as an atavistic power derived from Goblin blood with the build and attitudes of the Great Orc (aka Ogre).

Well, at least I know that now! :)

I have also implied the existence of trolls that are much more like the Elfquest trolls: wise in crafts and cunning. But, like so many of the humanoid races in the Shattered World, they may well have died out (long story).

Because of regeneration, my trolls get into lots of fights, and are very likely to have character levels in fighting classes because of the extra xp granted by neing in all those fights.

Thanks for bumping this back to the top.

I'm going to use Ogres with Fast Healing (3) as "Lesser" Trolls in my game, and use Fomarian Giants with Regen (5) as "Greater" Trolls. Bodies of both will turn to stone if they come into contact with sunlight.

However, I like the MM Troll, and want to keep it in the game as something else, maybe a mutated/enhanced version of my Greater Troll. I was think of calling the Skrags, though any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, and Verbeeg Giants are now my Ogres.

aaaahhh yes, Trolls it is, yes.. let me tell you the abridged origin of Trolls in Ptalmanar, or at least one version of the story as it's told by a Particular bard from the city of Belzig....

In the time before the Age of Bellinger, maybe even before the sundering of the Earth Being and the creation of the Sibling Gods (now deceased), when only the oldest of races yet walked the world, there was one race more fair to the eye, more quick witted and more skilled of hand than any other. THese were knowns as the Trollia. In their own language Trollia meant blessed, for so they were. The Maker of all things had gifted them above the Giants and even the firstborn (who would eventually become the elves, and humans). He had given them clear sure voices to sing songs, he had given them keen senses to know the world and he had given them the intellect to think great thougts. But in those days The Maker of all things did frequently move amongst his peoples as an avatar of light, and when he came, he came most often to the giants, and he would listen to their tales and praise them for their toils, far more so than the Trollia. The TYrollia saw this and wondered each to another, "Why does the Maker of all things treat us and they so? Are we not fair to look upon, are our voices not pleasign to the ear? Does not our works of art and labor surpass all but the Maker of all things itself? Why then does he prefer them to us?" Perceiving this lack of humility the Unmaker, brother and opposite of The Maker of all things did come to the Trollia in the guise of one of their own, and this he did ask, "If the Maker of all things prefers the dotard Giants and their clumsy works of stone, then let them have his attention, we can delve into magics they cannot fathom and we will be enough in ourselves that we do no longer need the Maker of all things to approve of us. Let us show him that we are his greatest creation and in so doing surpass what even thinks we are capable of." So noneyed was the voice of the Unmaker in this form, so much did its words echo in the souls of the Trollia that they agreed, and he showed them the magics he spoke of, he introduced them to the taint of chaos, the power of the irrational and they despairerd and were lost in pain, anger, and confusion. Thus those that were not consumed body and soul became theTrolls, powerful creatuires of chaos, in lifelong agony and bordering on insanity, but possessed of powerful bodies and devious cunning, delighting in the torture and destruction of the rest of the Maker's peoples, and a lesson in humility for us all.

This is a single story of one possible origin for Trolls. In any event, Chaos Trolls in the Twin Crowns setting are quite different from Trolls in most settings. They are not stupid, but they are physically powerful, in fact many can advance as Priests of the Unmaker, and it is rumored that the females are so different from the males that they appear as if an entirely different race, and are far more deadly....
