TUW: The Outpost

MacConnell

Creator of The Untamed Wilds
Maka will search the bodies for anything useful, comparing their armor with his, to see how well they are equipped, and also looking for talismans, such as bones, ore, or stones, which might have Way proclivities.
Vittero searches his fallen opponents.

Adisakti motions for Taylar to give him a hand as he removes the bodies of the fallen from the main path, carrying them random distances and directions into the surrounding forest. "I am sure that the local animals will get at these soon enough, but I would rather err on the side of caution about leaving the signs of such a battle visible on the road."

The bodies are stripped of all that is of value. Each man contains only the stubble of growth of hair about his head and face, as if each was shaved before setting out upon this assignment. Underneath the white linen tabard, each is armored with the standard quilted tunic, that has been dyed green, of a Kingdom Regular. Unlike the nomadic bands of indigenous peoples that are occasionally encountered, these soldiers are not adorned with any trinkets or talismans.

Vittero offers, "Looks like these were regular soldier who have recently been proselyted into whatever they are now. It was almost like they could not think for themselves."

Though nothing can be found that might offer a particular proclivity for waylines, a total of twenty harnin short swords and twenty wooden bucklers should provide quite a return in trade, and each man is carrying several measures of dried meat. In addition to the quilted tunics, each proselyte is girded with a simple, yet practical, pigskin belt and shod in pigskin Knee boots. A total of 340 marks are recovered from the lot.

Once their garments are removed, it can be noted that each man has a brand on the left deltoid area of that shoulder. The brand appears to be an image of the sun. Other mars and various scars are noted, but only those expected on the body of any soldier.

All unwanted clothing is summarily burned, a single piece at a time so as to not create too much smoke and the possibility of unwanted attention. The party's cart and donkeys are retrieved and a camp is made. Vittero looks after Raven Elk's injury, from which he will soon recover.

Maka will help heal everyone who is injured, by adding his talents to the manipulation of Way.

Maka will then compare the Pigskin knee boots to his Sheepskin boots; if the Pigskin is better, and if the boots fit, he will take them. He will also pick up a Pigskin belt, since he has no girding currently, and he recognizes the benefit of having it.

OOC:
The Southroad Fair Developing Community thread lists Pigskin as being better, but only base statistics are given. Can you give me the exact stats for the boots in LINE chat?

Maka will help heal everyone who is injured...
The injured are all tended but some time will still be need for a complete mend. Time is currently and available luxury. Maka find the confiscated belt to his liking but rejects the notion of trading boots.

Adisakti paces about as if something is bothering him. Perhaps he was gathering his thoughts. "No orders. We did not find any documents on this group. Their orders must have been verbal. I am guessing the were specific to the Pelimonra fishing village. Shame! They are such peaceable people."

"Anyway, I think Vittero is right. These are new recruits. I bet this was a test mission. Supposed to be easy. I am glad we were able to make it impossible to report. I only wish we could have known how to prevent it."

Vittero nods at his words. "I think this sunburst dyed into their arms is significant too."

The twenty swords are loaded into the wagon along with the bucklers. Nothing else was considered to be of any value.

Once the Outliers are ready to move, Vittero brooches an idea. "I think we should make our way toward the Kingdom seat, not all the way into West Cove, mind you, but close enough to take note of any more troop movements. It seems that the priesthood is commandeering Kingdom Regulars. This is a bad notion of a power shift. What say you?"

Taylar gives a big stretch, as though he hasn't been active in a while. Before all the soldier uniforms are burned, he suggests that the group keep five of the best examples to wash and repair in case they need disguises for infiltration. If there are any soldiers that cling to life he will touch and drain them of what is left to heal his wounds. He helps collect the swords and other items, and then suggests, "Instead of selling these weapons and armor we should donate them to worthy villagers to help defend their homes. It will mean more to them than the coin will mean to us."

Raven Elk is astounded by the relative effectiveness of the sonic attacks versus the comparable feebleness of the physical ones.
He is also surprised by the ease with which the darker powers of Way, like draining essence, comes so easy. He now sees that his Doom is not the end of his life, but that to be a medicine man or shaman one gas to balance light and dark, and darkness comes too easy. He would have to be careful.
While thinking these things, he also checks for anything with enhanced Way proclivities.
Hearing Vittero's idea, Raven Elk merely nods in agreement. There'll be time for talk later.

Taylar... "Instead of selling these weapons and armor we should donate them to worthy villagers to help defend their homes. It will mean more to them than the coin will mean to us."
Adisakti looks at the over the gathered supplies, at each of his friends, and nods his agreement with Taylar.

He is also surprised by the ease with which the darker powers of (Bending), like draining (life), come so easily. He now sees... While thinking these things, he also checks for anything (tuned to certain waylines)...
Taylar successfully leaches the remaining life from a few of the men to find himself restored, as if untouched in the previous combat.

Seeing that Raven Elk is perusing the spoils and recognizing what he is doing offers some deduction. "You have sensed nothing yet. Am I right?"

Raven Elk nods.

"These religious soldiers seem to be on a mission not only to kill those who are not Markidian but also those who have the talent of Bending. You can save your time. They are not going to have anything tuned to any proclivity. I am suspecting that the real mission behind these raids is to prevent any chance of resistance against whoever is orchestrating them. I would bet against a shaved head that the top dog and his cronies are all Benders."

Adisakti shakes his head at Taylar's idea for disguise. "Sorry, big guy, but it will never work. Look at these men. They are all Markidian. Their heads are shaved, and they all have that tattoo on their arm that Vittero noticed. Vittero is the only one of use who is Markidian. Blast the West Wind! He and Raven are the only ones of us who are even Aedaman."

He paces around a bit, gathering his thoughts and kicks at one of the bodies. "We are not going to be able to infiltrate this order. We found that ledger on that one upshot priest. I say, after we take this stuff the the Pelimonra Village, we move toward West Cove like Vittero was saying. We will have to do it from hiding. We need to see if we can find someone giving orders. I don't think we are ready to take this problem head on, but we can sure as the Darkness start picking off the pieces!"

Turning the wagon toward the coast, the Outliers decide to make camp for the evening in order to not arrive at night. Starting out at first light, it is early yet when the edge of the village is reached. It is the smell that assails the senses, first. It is not only the coastal haze that lingers but smoke. As the crew moves about the village or what used to be a village, they find that everything has been burned and every living thing has been killed, even livestock and pets, not a building remains standing, not a boat remains on the water.

Taylar will search the village anyway, looking for things the soldiers missed.
Everyone helps in the search. Absolutely nothing of value remains in the village, not that the village likely contained anything of monetary value, anyway. Every single thing appears to have been meticulously destroyed. No structure remains standing. No item is unbroken.

Maka frowns, "This is beyond savage. This is pure evil. They don't want to subjugate these people. They want to wipe them out completely. They want to DESTROY them. If we cannot infiltrate this soldier group, then we must bring the fight to them. We must not only keep up our end, but we must recruit others to our cause as well. We need to organize a resistance. Once we have more numbers, we might be able to plant a spy or two among their ranks."

"So far, they have only exterminated small villages. We know how news travels poorly and not very far, if at all sometimes. Though not impossible, Maka, your plan has many difficulties, and I don't know if we have the ability to pull it off --- but, all the same, we must try something."

Knocking the dust from his hands, Taylar says, "The first thing we must do is return to the Outpost and report what we have found. From there we can send messengers to other communities to warn them of these atrocities. You are right in that we must resist, but we must inform first. We will bring all the things we have collected so far as evidence." Taylar looks at his sword and shield, gleaned from previous battle with these butchers. "I will be trading these in when we return home. I no longer want to carry them."

Maka frowns, "This is beyond savage... We need to organize a resistance..."
Raven Elk says... "... we must try something."
... Taylar says, "The first thing we must do is return to the Outpost..."
Vittero gathers some of the ashes from the village and collects them in a small bag. "I, too, think that they are cowardly attacking the smallest of villages in the area to ensure greater odds of success. I am with Taylar. Let us return home and report what we know. I am taking this ash as a memorial."

Taylar looks at his sword and shield... "I will be trading these in when we return home. I no longer want to carry them."
Adisakti offers, "Perhaps you can have your father repurpose the sword into a different design, a little irony to return to his owner, point first."

The return trip is more solemn and quiet than the manner in which the Outliers usually travel, each man content with his own thoughts. Upon arriving in town, in about the middle of the afternoon, Plascimon, Vittero's father, Priest of the Dawn, is standing in the main street in front of the temple having a discussion with another man. A crowd has gathered to listen.

The other man, a Markidian of about the same age as Plascimon, is dressed in a deep, red robe, adorned with gold trim along all of its edges. The robe appears to have been manufactured with some practicality for it is divided to aid in riding, but is overlaid with a white surcoat, containing the emblazoned image of the Sun upon its backside. The man's head is crown with a golden diadem, jeweled in the semblance of a rose bramble. Though he is, yet, unknown to the party members, this man is, none other than, the Divine Praetor, himself.

The discussion seems peaceable, though verbose with grandiose vocabulary. Despite his prominent position of power, the Divine Praetor vocalizes his concession to what Plascimon is saying to him. The summary of it is that the use of soldiers has marred the image of the face of the religion and undermined its benevolent ideology of a structured society under Law.

The Divine Praetor bows slightly to acknowledge the lower ranking Priest of Dawn and extends his left hand. Plascimon bends and kisses the ring on the other man's hand. The Divine Praetor then pronounces a blessing upon the priest and the town before removing his surcoat and rolling it up, placing it in a leather pouch on his retrieved horse. He then mounts and rides away, unescorted.

Maka frowns with distaste, but keeps his thoughts to himself. ~Though I love him like a second father, Plascimon is a fool. By protesting the use of troops, he has marked himself as an enemy, or at the very least, as a malcontent. It would not surprise me to learn of him being arrested and imprisoned. I don't know who the red robed man is, but he is someone of importance, and I am sure that he will report what Plascimon has said to the Praetor himself. Perhaps we should talk to him about the dangers of openly expressing dissenting opinions? Perhaps Vittero can convince him to be more subtle? A question for a future time.~

After the Divine Praetor departs, in the middle of the street, Taylar takes out one of the salvaged uniforms of the slain soldiers, the highest ranking one if he has it, and uses it to wipe the dirt from his body, wiping it under his arms, and then wiping his feet on it. He uses his short sword to pick up the cloth and states loudly, in Maldrog, "I am done with this rag. Who wants it? We took it from the religious zealots that killed and destroyed the village that the boy told us of."
Using his physical ability, Taylar will go to a sturdy wood post and drive the sword into it, pinning the uniform up for all to see. He will drop the shield on the ground by the post.

Raven Elk is just as angry as Taylar, but he shakes his head at his friend's display. If Maka is right about the danger Plascimon has placed on himself, and potentially all of the townsfolk of the Outpost, for 'Tero's dad's"assessment":

Then surely there are prying, spying eyes in the Praetor's service in town. Raven Elk can't help but believe the Outliers and all of The Outpost is in grave danger.

Raven Elk grabs Taylar:
"Brother, were you sure that was wise?"
He then tries to redirect Taylar to a more industrious path:
"Let's get these weapons and such to your father and see if we can't have him turn them into new weapons to destroy this new foe,"

Taylar looks Raven Elk right in the eyes and responds in Thisidan, "We, the brave, must show the way for the others. The more these butchers are concerned with us, the less they will be concerned with villages like the ones that were attacked. If we truly would protect those that cannot fight against this threat, then we must put the focus on ourselves."

OOC: The scale for this map is 1 pace per square, which is about 2 yards in America terms or 2 meters for the entire rest of the world which is not religiously fixated on an illogical measuring system. There is more to the town extending in all directions with the Temple of Dawn being the central focus of the community. Ignore the blue square. That is the cursor in the screenshot.

Raven Elk doesn't flinch at Taylar's challenge:
"Should we be so eager to endanger our townsfolk's lives? I think we should be concentrating on taking the battle to them, not bringing it home, intentionally."
Raven Elk knows that these priest-raiders may attack The Outpost at any time, but later, so that they can prepare effective defenses, than sooner would be preferred. He just wished Taylar would understand that and why Raven Elk's over-concern about the open taunt.
