TUW: The Outpost

Adi, being quite entertained both by the size of the goats and the work necessary to capture them, gets to resetting snares with Raven Elk. He looks at Raven grinning ear to ear. " Luck? That was all skill, those goats never stood a chance."

Evening 220 - Day 223

OOC: Demographic Note on Fauna:
Normal varmints are considered to be squirrels, whether ground or tree, hares, and rats. Large varmints are swamp and jack rabbits, nutria, groundhogs, and badgers. All of these animals are considered food and are readily eaten by travelers, explorers, adventurers, and nomadic peoples.

Taylar eyes the small goats skeptically. "I was expecting something larger. If I can't even catch one of these things, then hunting is definitely not my calling. The only question I have left is, 'How do they taste?' If they can't keep up, you can let them ride on the horses, but I'm not carrying one unless it's in my belly." He chuckles as he props his baton against his shoulder.
After their catch of the 4 dwarf goats, Raven Elk asks:
"Do you think we could get this lucky again?", as he gets ready to reset the snare.
Adi, being quite entertained both by the size of the goats and the work necessary to capture them, gets to resetting snares with Raven Elk. He looks at Raven grinning ear to ear. " Luck? That was all skill, those goats never stood a chance."
Maka shakes his head. He decides that some lessons must be learned on one's own rather than explained. Having hunted with his tribe since childhood, he knows that any animals that were not captured will find a new route. All of that squealing will deter anything else in the area for, at least, several hours, and the birds, which cannot see at night, will likely water themselves in the middle of the day when predation is at its lowest. As he prepares to get some sleep, he offers, "Good luck."
Vittero muddles the minds of the other goats so that they will quit screaming. He laughs at Taylar's words. He offers to hold the leads on the now sleeping goats while Raven Elk and Adi give snaring another try.
Days 221 - 223:
As Maka suspected, the second attempt at snaring proved unsuccessful, but the night was enjoyable, anyway. As the crew travels they scan the skies and the horizon as a matter of habit. Most observations are made at a distance to be pointless to pursue. Larger birds are constant in the skies at the edges of recognizable distance. Larger game is sometimes noted on far distant hills. Insects, small birds and small reptiles are a constant, and are often encountered at very short distance. Only the occasional chitinous beetles, about the size of a man's fist, could readily be captured or provide any real value.

Larger insects or spiders, about the size of a person's head, are noticed about once daily at a distance close enough to pursue them. Again, only chitinous beetles of this sort would be of any value. The spiders no longer being enough of a challenge to provide adequate combat training. Collectible game consists almost entirely of varmints.

During the days' travel, the goats become more content with being held and allowed to feed while still leashed and require less alteration of their behavior by the manipulation of Way. About a day out from Boga City, the crew comes into the farmland that surrounds the city. The farmers are friendly and wave in greeting. A few children even approach, especially attracted to the sight of the tiny goats. They chatter quickly, as children tend to do, in the Centrin tongue, which none of the crew speaks. No one, at this point, attempts to speak Thisidan.

The crew arrives at the western gate an is hailed by a gate guard.

After the party returns the greeting, Taylar smiles and says to the guard, "We come from the Outpost. We are here at Boga City on business. We are looking for a man named Liam. We did a job for him and we're trying to report that it was a success. Also, do you know anyone that would like to purchase some goats? These started following us along the road, but our line of work is too dangerous for such pets."

Day 223: Boga City

OOC: Demographic Note on Fauna:
Common insects consists of butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, and locusts, all about the size of a man's hand.
Larger insects are of the same variety but can be as large as a man's head. Tiny insects consist only of honey bees. There are no pests such as mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, or ants.

Vittero decides to collect the carapaces of any insects encountered during the travels, since they seem to have some monetary value.
GM: After the encounter with the Kaalatala, Vittero is able to collect the carapaces of 13 normal beetles.

The guard shakes his head and laughs. He lifts his left hand and pumps the palm toward Taylar, twice, a universal gesture for wait.
"Slow. I speak Thisidan, but I need you to speak, slow. I think in Centrin. One thing at a time, please. You are from The Outpost. Good to have you here. Who is Liam?"

Vittero thinks for a moment then replies.
"We were told to ask for him by name at this gate. He is a worker on that."
He gestures toward the canal being dug.

The guard nods, turns, and whistles toward an archer atop the inner wall. He then quickly yells up some words in Centrin, which none of the crew understands. The archer waves, then moves northward along the wall. He yells down at another man some distance from where the crew is currently standing. After a minute or so, the new man approaches. He nods to the guard and the crew, then introduces himself in Centrin.

The guard translates for the crew and for the foreman.
"This is Marcel. He is the foreman for this workcrew." He then inquires about Liam. The foreman nods gives the exact same wait gesture as the guards had previously done, then walks off. Within a few more minutes Liam comes to the crew. He tries to clean some of the dirt from his hands before greeting everyone in the Centrin style of shaking hands.

Liam seems very excited to see the crew.
"I am so pleased you have come, and you found one of the horses, plus you have my rented one. I owe you payment."

Further information is conveyed that Liam would like the crew to give him time to retrieve what is owed them and to then follow him to the farm where he originally rented his horse.

Day 223: Liam

OOC: GM TIP:
While traveling, it is in the party's interest if members look for useful plants, minerals, and ores. Unlike collecting varmints for food, a specific statement must be made. These activities are not taken for granted.

Taylar says, "Yes we avenged your family for you. It was not easy. Those tribals fought hard."
Vittero elbows Taylar, and jovially jibes him.
"Give the man a break. Will you? He is a laborer not a puffed peacock. Had he not returned to work, he likely could not have paid us."

The crew follows Liam back to one of the farms where he had originally rented the horse. He talks almost constantly, switching between Centrin and Thisidan without being able to convey much that is comprehensible. He points and gestures as the crew walks.

He diverts from the main road and approaches a stables on one of the farms. He is greeted by a stable hand who then sends a boy running to main house. The stable hand greets that crew but then shrugs and shakes his head, apparently unable to speak any Thisidan.

When the proprietor of the farm arrives, he engages Liam in conversation, which seems to be taking too long. While this is occurring the farmer's wife and some children arrive. A little girl speaks excitedly and captures one of the pygmy goats, holding it to her chest. The little goat, for its part, squeals at first but then calms as the child pets and talks to it. She talks excitedly to her mother. All of which sounds like blah, blah, blah to the crew.

Liam concludes his business with the farmer and coins change hands, but from the farmer to Liam, which seems a surprise to the crew. Liam, in addition to returning his rented horse has apparently sold his brother's as well. Liam then turns to the party hand hands 50 francs worth of copper coins to Taylar.
"The 50 that I promised you."

He then proceeds to count out 50 francs worth more and hands it to Taylar.
"For your trouble of coming to Boga City to find me and finding one of my brother's horses. Also, The little girl loves the tiny goats and her mother is wanting to buy them. She is offering 20 ocrin each. An ocrin is the Boga City coin. It has the same value as a franc."

Day 223: Concluded Business

OOC: GM TIP:
While traveling, more animals are seen at distances that make them unapproachable than are close enough to identify or spark interest in pursuit. As each character becomes more proficient in observing others and making themselves less observable, a greater variety of encounters will occur.

Having all agreed to conclude the sale of the goats, the crew finds themselves in possession of more coin, yet also unemployed. All activities have pushed the time to midday. Vittero cracks his knuckles and draws in a deep breath.
"Well, what now? I am sure we could buy some supplies here, like more arrows, but I doubt we could find any job other than digging that big hole."

OOC: Boga City is designed for epic rank adventures. The City Guard take care of simple tasks for which the crew would be hired back in The Outpost.

Taylar looks around and says, "I half expected Liam to have some other kind of task for us. Maybe we can find a tavern frequented by guards, buy them a few drinks and see if there is any work that falls out of their patrol area that we can take on. If nothing else we can make some friends before we go."
