UA: Whirling Frenzy worth it?

I disagree. No matter how many attacks you get, you'll always have an extra attack with whirling frenzy. More attacks is always better than fewer attacks.

He means proportionally less effective.

2d4 is better than 1d4 - a falchion vs a kukri, say. Average of 5 vs average of 2.5. It's twice as good!

But while 2d4+20 is still better than 1d4+20, it's not twice as good. Average of 25 vs average of 22.5. The difference is negligible.

The difference between a whirling frenzy - 1 attack vs 2 attacks! - is far more noticeable than the difference between 7 attacks and 8 attacks.

In the last campaign I played in, my group and I invented our own version of the Whirling Frenzy for my character (long before UA came out). It was a bit different, though- and, in retrospect, I'm beginning to think that the Whirling Frenzy would have suited him better. Basically, my character was supposed to be a kind of Barbarian/Samurai- sort of- so his Strength and Dexterity were really high, he had Weapon Finesse, and used a Katana. His rage, however, worked exactly the same as a Barbarian Rage, the only difference being that he gained a +4 to Strength and Dexterity, and a -2 to Constitution (so he had a few less Hit Points, but his AC and Strength would go up). The duration went off of his Wisdom, rather than Constitution, to represent his focus or something. He didn't gain the extra attack, like Whirling Frenzy does, and he gained the normal Indomitable Will instead of Evasion, which the WF grants. The extra attack would have come in handy, though, when he was tearing through undead in the Underdark. Oh well. He was an awesome character to play. With his Dex bonus and all from Rage, and 20th level, his AC, at best, was somewhere in the 50's. Nasty.

Feh. Okay, until you factor in feats like Improved Crit & Great Cleave. With GC, no matter how many attacks you have, another attack is always another chance to kill & cleave on...and on and on. With Imp Crit, that's a whole other 30% chance to crit - not insignificant no matter how many attacks per round! The difference between 7 & 8 attacks may be the difference between downing two frost giants in one round or three.

I get your point, though. I guess my point is that with the right feats, every attack is an opportunity to demolish Foe A & move right on to Foe B, so it's always better to have more chances to crit & cleave.

Don't forget that Whirling Frenzy also gives the same strength boost as rage. I'd say it's defintiely worth it since that cancels out the -2 penalty and you still get a boost to AC.

I probably have the wrong idea, but it looks like, from this thread, that the extra attack can be made as part of an attack action, not only a full attack. Am I crazy, or what?

Check my first post: I houseruled at once that you could get additional attacks with Whirling Frenzy while taking a standard action. Combine with 3.0 Expert tactician and you'll have barbarians with 3 attacks in the first combat round against flatfooted opponent.

That's...so completely abusive & broken. You did this on purpose? Why?
