Ultimate Magus Querries

Myhair

First Post
Guys, i am new to the forum and i have had many questions in the past answered right here. So, i once again find myself needing help and i am bowing to knowledge greater than my own!

My first question is this.

Can a spellcaster have a caster level higher than than actual level. (spells known, spells per day, power level of the spell etc...)

ex. be 5th level actual but virtually be a 6th level caster.

I am not aware of any such method. However, you might want to rephrase what you are asking. It is certainly possibly to have a caster level higher than your level.

Well i was looking at the ultimate magus and i found an interesting thing. the Ultimate Magus PrC gives or it allows a Arcane preparer (Spellbook) style caster to advance as UM gains levels. And it also grants the same for a Spontaneous caster. I know how this works already so my next question is... can this ability be used for a PrC that has its own spell list?

Yes. For example, if a PC is a Wizard/Assassin/Ultimate Magus, you can apply spell casting ability progressions granted by Ultimate Magus class onto Wizard and Assassin classes, appropriately.

But I am afraid that you are misunderstanding how Ultimate Magus, Spellcasting ability progression and Caster Level Works.

Arcane Spell Power class feature of Ultimate Magus class just raise your Caster Level only. So, you will not gain better spells known nor spells per day from it. Just caster level, which determines the effectiveness of your spells (number of damage dice rolled, duration, etc.)

See the example character. Kalind Leschay is Wizard 4/Sorcer 1/Ultimate Magus 4. She is a 9th-level character.

Basically, she casts spells as a 5th-level sorcerer and a 6th-level wizard. Those numbers define her spells known and spells per day.

Thanks to Arcane Spell Power class feature, her caster level for Sorcerer spells is 7th and caster level for wizard spells is 8th. Those numbers define the strength of her spells (say, how many damage dice you roll when casting lessor orb of sound).

ok that makes very good sense now..Thank you.

Arcane Power gives you variable increases as a higher level caster BUT not Level changes such as spells per day etc...kool that aside.

How would the level bump in spontaneous caster be applied to the WILD SOUL PrC. that has spontaneous spells but for spellcasting grants a "+1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class" could this be applied to Wizard as well as the one from Ultimate magus?

OK enough beating around the bush here is what im am getting at direct and to the piont. Wizard 5, Wild Soul 1, Ultimate Magus 10 = 22nd level caster? Does this actually work or am i missing something?

Ultimate Magus prestige class itself does not grant you independent spellcasting ability. This prestige class just increase the spellcasting abilities of spellcastig classes you already have. So as Wild Soul.

So, if you are a Wizrd/Sorcerer//Ultimate Magus and then take levels in Wild Soul, you can't choose "Ultimate Magus" when applying spellcasting ability progression gained from Wild Soul level. Each time Wild Soul class gives you "+1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class", you must choose either Wizard or Sorcerer.

Ultimate Magus gives: +1 level of existing prepared arcane casting class and
+1 level of existing spontaneous arcane casting class

Give one to Wizard(prepared) and one to Wild soul (spontaneous)

Wild Soul gives at level 2: +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class

Give this one to Wizard also.:D

Does this work?

BTW I really appreciate everyone's work on this problem. I have been stewing over it again and again pouring over the books and looking for snippits online and so far nada...
Thanks again now and in the future for your help. I hope i can do the same in the future.

No, Wild Soul itself is not a sponteneous arcane casting class, nor it gives you independent spellcasting ability. Spontaneous Spells class feature of Wild Soul just gives you abilities to cast certain spells by sacrificing prepared arcane spells or spell slots. That is more like the class feature of cleric.
