Uncommon Preferences & Finding Your Group

My favorite type of game is low level, low powered, low fantasy semi-horror in a secondary world fantasy setting. Kind of The X-Files or Supernatural meets The Witcher, but without the super-powered power fantasy characters of the Witcher; just regular Joes trying to get by in a dark, horror, noir fantasy setting. It will also be role-play and investigation heavy. It will essentially be the Call of Cthulhu game, at least in terms of what the PCs do and what the vibe is, in a dark fantasy setting. Mostly I find players who want to play D&D with all the implicit assumptions that it comes with, though. It's not perfect, but it's close enough. What's the expression from Voltaire? Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good. I've had to make some compromises, but it beats sitting here with the poor consolation prize of game purity but no actual game.

Plus, I relocated not that long ago, so I had to mostly join ongoing games with people I met who already knew each other. I thought it poor form to try and enact a coup to get them to engage on my ideal game when everyone else was happy with what they were already doing.

More or less this.

6-10, max 12 sessions and done. With scheduling conflicts, those 12 sessions can and do strech to 6-8 months of irl time.
Not heroes necessary, but at least capable enough. I also prefer horizontal growth, not only vertical.

I'll run mostly R rated games, and i prefer more grayscale morality and antiheroes or flawed heroes than boyscouts.
I prefer PG13 and Boyscouts with flaws. By heroes, I mean both better than normal folk, and the white hats. I prefer the kind of "we're on the side of the angels despite consorting with demons" of Buffy and Seasons 1-3 of Angel, tho' I've a soft spot for scoundrels like the Firefly crew, Han & Chewie, Jadzia Dax, Ezri Dax, and Benjamin Sisco. And DS9 versions of Kang, Koloth, and Qor. And the Picard version of Worf.

I'm fond of Saving the World as a campaign ender... in fantasy.

I prefer my Sci Fi a touch more grey - SW OT, BBtS, DS9 and Bab5, not TNG.
