Unconcious (Save or Damage ends). Think Mean.

Just curious if any DMs out there allow a player to walk up to an NPC that is sleeping and just slit their throat for a instant kill? Seems to me if we are thinking realistically and that NPC has been knocked out or put to sleep by a spell, they aren't defending themselves and it could easily be done. Thoughts? Comments?

Depends.

If he wanted to do this on Orcus who had prior been sleeped by the wizard, than no, regardless of how much sense it makes.

If the npc happens to be a minion, I'd allow it. Otherwise it's just a Coup de Grace.

Depends on the situation

Non-solo, non-elite monster I would allow if it's the only one left. Minions you can do it whenever.

Special exception if the party have yet to enter combat. So if your party snuck into a cave of sleeping goblins, I would let you do it with an increasing Perception +10 on the nearby monsters.

Yeah, I agree I'd never allow it on "boss" of any sort. But I can see the point of it being minions and easy to kill them w/ only 1 hp a pop. Good points all, thanks for the responses. I've just had players asking me about it lately and I told them the Coup de Grace was the ruling in the book, but the more I thought about it the more I thought it made sense as well to weaker minions or low level creatures.

CDG does autokill minions. They definately suffer a hit, which means they die. If you plan an adventure that's supposed to have the 'classic' guards, who drop immediately when the players jump them from stealth, those guards are minions.

For regular monsters, the players should be taking the opportunity to guarantee a crit with a high damage encounter power (at low levels, 2[w] with a 1d8 weapon can be enough, which is fairly low), which will usually be enough to kill a monster. Strikers can often simply use an at-will.

On even tough elites, a striker with high-damage powers might be able to take out an elite with a single CDG attack.

Solos are not going down in a single hit. You simply cannot get that much damage in a single blow.

If its a human/humanoid opponent, completely disarm and un-equip them. Take their weapon, cut them out of their armor, strip off their boots. Leave them in their undies then wake them up

Feel free to hog tie them too, but that just seems mean :D

Too kind.

Seeing as powers are the order of the day and the rules to prevent spellcasting no longer apply the thing to do is:

1) strip gear
2) bind
3) coup de grace

If this does not work, continue striking the target until dead.

If death cannot be reasonably guaranteed, then nuke it from orbit-its the only way to be sure.

What could your party do to an unconcious enemy (if damage wakes them)?

I was going to say teabag and Polaroid. Now, I'll say teabag and Polaroid with the inclusion of the above.

That would sure make my DM's jaw drop.

If your DM isn't allowing the Polaroid ritual featured in Dragon magazine then I suppose a nice sketchpad would do. And since craft/art skills are pretty much just RP now, all the members of the party can take turns and each get a fantastically rendered likeness.
