4e's Underdark is a pretty amazing book

Loads of usable material, sitting right there for the taking. Flavor that is solid and interesting (seriously! good 4e fluff! I'm not even kidding!). Quite nice artwork with a minimum of rehashes (I think the Quaggoth was a re-hash, but I am not sure how many people remember Monsters of Faerun in 3e. ;) ).

Monsters, as always, a little weak just sitting there, but Torog is given the space he needs to breathe and be awesome and horrific. The other ones are given enough support throughout the book that a few extra statblocks are nice. There's not much "Oh, why would I ever use this thing?" going on.

This book kicks some serious butt. And a lot of it won't be re-printed in the DDI!

This is the first 4e book I have looked over that has given me the feeling of "I've friggin' gotta use this thing next week."

I didn't expect much. A lot of Drow and repetition of the groan-worthy phrase "shadowdark" and perhaps too much on the kind-of-uninspiring Fomorians. But I want to use this. This has a lot of awesome in it.

About the only thing I could've asked for is an index of stuff by level/tier, so that I can quickly find all the cool Heroic tier sites and cities for ease of sticking them into my campaign when I need to. But even without that, I know I can turn to this book to deliver me some awesome.

Nice job.

I agree, Kamikaze Midget. I'm going to be running a late-Heroic-into-Paragon Underdark adventure, and this might be the first 4E book I read cover to cover. Lots of good stuff (although I think the picture of Torog is a bit silly).

Underwild sounds kinda cool. Actually, it struck me several times when I read Underdark, how amazingly goofy the word "Shadowdark" really is. I wonder who at WoTC came up with that.

Having finished reading the book, I can say that I really liked it but ultimate liked 'Planes Below' even better. It has the same high points but fewer low points:

The main reason why I didn't like Underdark as much are frankly the delves. I realize they seem to be popular, but I don't really have any use for them. And they do take up space that could have been filled with more awesome stuff.

The 'Dungeon Delve' book was one of the few 4e books I passed.

I liked it. I still think MoTP has the best fluff provided yet for core products.

That said, I don't mind having a few delves in a book, mainly because I have no artistic ability and can scavage up interesting maps to trace and reuse.

So, how about Underfell instead of Shadowdark? :)

Edit: It even sounds a bit like the Norse Niflhel - "The Place Where Dead Men Fall From Hell (Niflheim)".

IMC Niflheim - the Netherworld - is the Shadowfell, ruled by Hela/Raven Queen.

Niflhel is thus where you go if you're killed in the Shadowfell, which could be equated to the Underfell, making it a nasty place of angry ghosts.
