Underdark. Woah.

So, how about Underfell instead of Shadowdark? :)

Edit: It even sounds a bit like the Norse Niflhel - "The Place Where Dead Men Fall From Hell (Niflheim)".

IMC Niflheim - the Netherworld - is the Shadowfell, ruled by Hela/Raven Queen.

Niflhel is thus where you go if you're killed in the Shadowfell, which could be equated to the Underfell, making it a nasty place of angry ghosts.

That's how I use Shadowfell (and the Raven Queen) IMC as well. Conversely, Feywild includes Alfheim (Arvandor and normal Feydwild) and Svartalfheim (Feydark). The natural world is Midgard. And I could go on ....

Anyway, I flipped through the Underdark at the store. I would have to agree about it being too much about delves. On the plus side though, it was a good Toolbox for newer DMs. Plane Below was a recent better buy IMO.

Great stuff, thanks. :)

So is Frey Corellon? Actually IMC the elven love goddess Hanali Cenalil is an aspect of Freya and lover of Corellon, which would raise some (appropriately Wagnerian) questions of incest... But maybe best to avoid that one.

I set my campaign in the early centuries after Fimbulwinter and Ragnarokk. The twin crises only ended when the most of the Aesir (Phb gods with Norse characteristics) descended into the great yawning chaos that formed the foundations of Muspelheim (The Abyss) and sacrificed themselves to imprison and weaken the Big Bad Tharizdun.

Three goddesses were left to help rebuild Midgard and the heavenly worlds of Alfheim, Valhalla, and Asgard. These were Sehanine, Erathis, and the Raven Queen. Some mortals conceptualize these goddesses as The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone.

It gets fairly convoluted, so I'll stop there. One thing I also did was made the mythic Aesir-Vanir War be an earlier catastrope. The Aesir (essentially the Phb gods) fought a family of gods, the Vanir, which consisted the gods Bane, Asmodeus, Dispater, Glasya, Levistus, and several others. The Vanir became increasingly corrupt and malicious. The Aesir-Vanir War only ended when the Vanir self-destructed when Levistus killed one of his own family members.

Eventually the Aesir won by detaching Vananheim from the heavens and casting that world down into the hells. Vananheim transforms into helheim, a.k.a the Red Prison and takes on characteristics similar to the Nine hells and is sealed behind magic gates of uru-metal (adamantine).

The Delves are actually one of my favorite elements.

Don't get me wrong, I've got my issues with them (mainly, the "dungeon tiles" focus -- I don't use dungeon tiles, and I think they sort of limit the awesome that could come of an otherwise dynamite encounter/plot thread design). But I love that they put three connected mini-events featuring encounters, terrian, hazards, and everything, all assembled into one place that I can easily use right at the table. The format needs some work, but the core concept is really exactly what I need.

I'd rather have a book full of delves than a book full of monsters. ;)

And I like the Underwild and the Underfell better. :p

I'm also very pleased with the Underdark book. It's the first I've read in a while that's made me want to kickstart a new campaign after finishing it. Mind you, they had me at the walking fungus city.

This would spawn dozens of "great - now i have to change my Underwild" comments IMC. Sometimes, playing with English students can have it´s drawbacks. :p
I hear ya, but my own players are a bunch of immature nerds who even giggle at the town name, "Moonstair." :) (...And they forever called it "Bum-Looker")
