use magic device

Can a thief use his Use magical device skill to fool his weapon into thinking it is hitting a certain type of opponant. IE can a orc bane weapon that does 1d6 extra damage against orcs be fooled into thinking it has hit an orc and therefore do the extra damage.

My premise is that it would be similar in effect to blindly activating a device as you just try to "get it to go" rather than assume a persona or class skill when you are using a wand or scroll.

Or are the orcs considered to have a vunerability to a certain effect within the sword rather than the sword actually doing more damage ( if that makes sense)

No. As the ability description says, "ome magic items are activated by special words, thoughts, or actions. You can activate such an item..." An orc-bane weapon, to use your example, is a use-activated item. No special words, thoughts, or actions are required. Just using it against an opponent is activating it, so there is nothing else to do with the "Activate Blindly" option of UMD.

On a related issue, you could probably use UMD to get a holy sword to think you're not evil and thus evade the negative level, right?

Right, because with UMD you can emulate an alignment.

And you can emulate a race, but that won't help with the orc-bane weapon, unless you're hitting yourself ;)
You can only change (read: emulate) aspects of yourself in regard to UMD, not aspects of others OR aspects of the magic device; the orc-bane remains an orc-bane, and your troll opponent remains a troll opponent.

ha yes pretending to be an orc and hitting myself would work. ok had to ask :)

I'm not trying to hijack your thread, I'm just tryin' to keep the forum clear of identical thread names :) Anyways, here's my Use Magic Device question...

Would an Arcane Scroll used via Use Magic Device still incur Arcane Spell Failure?

How about if you're an orc rogue and you are getting hit by an Orc Bane weapon. Can you use your UMD skill to fool the sword into thinking that you are NOT an Orc?
