VTT / play by chat gameday?

Kahuna Burger

First Post
I recall on one discussion of Virtual Table Tops, someone mentioned a "con" of sorts built around trying out different ones. I was also thinking that before the VTT part of the digital initiative goes online, folks interested in it should take the time to see what is already out there to compare it to.

So would anyone be interested in doing an online "gameday" to show off and expereiment with your favorite VTT software? It would have to be primarily free or DM only programs (or those with trial versions), and we could do it over the course of a couple of days, so each "slot" would be made up of one software program. (I've been wanting to try out OpenRPG, so I could run something in that.)

Thoughts?

I'd consider something like this if it used voicechat and text chat and VTT all together.
Hopefully, some games would be run with voicechat, some with text only and some with both, so folks could try out various ways they would like to play.

Eh. I love the idea of an online Gameday, but I'd rather just run it in good old "Use any client you want" IRC on an RP-friendly network than wrestle with trying to get a half dozen different VTTs working.

I'd be interested in participating, as I've been kicking around the idea of playing in or running another online campaign but would like to see various tools and styles in practice.

Well, having been playing in a good old IRC chat based game lately, expereimenting with virtual tabletops that actually have maps has been a big priority for me. :\

If RPGtonight had better functionality ( :( ), it would be cool to just get a bunch of enworlders together on the website at once, but that would be a different sort of goal than I was considering.

Well, my problem is that my group has already tried things like MapTool, GameTable, OpenRPG, Fantasy Grounds, etc. It's such a pain to try and find a program that *everybody* can get up and running without any hassles that we've given up on it and decided to stick to just IRC.

The problem with all those programs you listed, Jeysie, is that they all require that additional components be installed (Java, DirectX, Python, etc.), and sometimes they even demand specific versions, or that they be installed in a specific order. This can sometimes lead to problems if some of the people in your gaming group aren't very computer savvy.

Have you tried Battlegrounds? It's all self-contained, so there's nothing else to install.
