Want to try this PbP thing

First Post
Hey all. I decided I wanted to try out this play by post thing. May as well, as I'm on the boards nearly every day anyway.

I looked around, but didn't see anything that was open. What I'm looking for is Plain Ol D&D, preferably something just starting. I can play and have fun with anything just about.

So, any DMs starting a game or have an opening? I'll need a breif rundown on how the PbP thing works too :).

Anyone feel like taking this n00b in?

I'm running the LHHS, IRR, Kobold Kingdom, and the Epic Game... but sadly I don't have any others. I might run a second LHHS game eventually, but it's not open currently. PbP is actually rather simple, you post everything that you would role-play and the DM responds normally as well. The big difference is combat, which is run like this:

DM states initiatives and the scene
PCs state their individual actions for the whole round
DM states the results of the actions (including dice rolls) for the round

Repeat.

So, instead of handling everything player by player, things are handled round by round. The big advantage to PbP is that Role-playing is extremely easy and fluid, since you can type everything as a story. The disadvantage is that the game moves slower, covering about 1 session in 2-4 weeks time, and having slightly less active combat. I do maps and other visual aids all the time, to add that tactical kick to my LHHS game, but not everyone can do that.

The other big advantage is that you can be playing in 4-10 games at a time (look at Gary H for instance), so you can get quite a bit of character concepts into use rather easily. I've noticed that there are not many games that have ended officially, but sometimes a game dies out -which can be discouraging.

Anyway, hope that helps,

Creamy speaks the truth!! I've got about a half dozen Monster Manual race PCs on the boards. :D

His other advice is sound, too. As for vanilla D & D games starting up, well, I've got a Kobold game starting soon, but I've already got seven PCs and that's not really that vanilla. After that, I've already cast a D20 Modern Supers game, and will be recruiting D20M GI Joe / Cobra opposing games.

After ALL that, I think I'll probably start a fantasy game... not sure how vanilla it'll be, though. I'm toying with the idea of having human, orc, goblin, and dwarves be the only PC races, and psionics replacing arcane magic - the elves having done something Really Really Bad thousands of years ago with arcane magic.

But now I'm rambling... in any case, just keep your eye out - this forum is more crowded than I've ever seen it recently, I'm sure a vanilla D & D game will start soon enough. :)

It really is crowded now. I'm completely amazed at how fast a thread can fall to page two. I guess I should just increase the number of thread-views per page or some such thing, but it's still rather fast.

As for vanilla... read the LHHS thread one, and if that's vanilla enough for you, I might be creating a second game in the same campaign world, as it seems to be going pretty well. Just go to the index at the top of the forum, it should be the first game listed ;).

Oh, and the official LHHS/IRR/HOTW/OTHER game chat room is #ir at chat.psionics.net (enworld's chat room), though its extremely uncommon to encounter anyone other than Janos there, and he's normally asleep.

gary can i be a goblin in your game? goblin shaman??

If you mean my post-arcanolyptic (:)) one I may potentially DM in the future, I'm not taking sign ups yet. I've got four games ahead of it to get started. :)

If you mean the goblin game I play in (Gobtales), you'd have to ask dreamthief.

Plus there's a large contingent of new folks who apparently post a half-dozen times per game per day.

Now, I'm good about keeping up on my games and checking the boards, but even *I* have trouble keeping up when I leave for an hour and I've got several pages of IC to read through.

I was like that, back during the 3rd IR. We posted 400 times in a matter of 24 hours, the first day of the game. That was the day... back when I only payed attention to one game, and so much attention it was the focus of...

Also, I'm rather impressed with those like Kitana and Jemal who are just jumping right into the mess.

The 3rd IR... that was before my day... you're old (in IC Forum years). :D

Yeah, Kitana, Krizzel, Jemal... they've immersed themselves in about a month. And the best thing is, they're good.

Heh - if creamsteak is old, then how old am I, garyh?

Yeah, it seems like everyday a new game pops up. None of them seem to die, either. I always ensure that I'm subscribed to all the threads concerning all the games I'm in, and usually don't actually wade through the IC forum itself. I've found that using the subscription thing works a lot nicer.
