Nice cinematography. I like how Mars blends into a traffic light. Whether the movie is good or bad, I think it's a pretty good teaser.

And it's got to be better than Independence Day.

When I first heard that this was going into production I had no interest in it whatsover. Now having seen that trailer I'm at least curious. I think it's the slow build and the voice over that did. It also helps that I'm not entirely familiar with the source material and I'm also not an overly sensitive fanboy. I have my problems with Spielberg but he actually makes some pretty dark movies. His thing is that instead of running with the darkness to the end he kind of chickens out right at end i.e. A.I., Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan.

My problem with the trailer is the tag line "They have always been here". In the classic War of the Worlds story, they aliens come down and attack. It's the fact the alien's immune system does not work well on earth, and they all end up getting sick from earth born disese and dieing. If they have always been here, then if Spelberg is being faithful to the orginal story, they should have been killed off awhile ago.

And how interesting would that be?

We've already seen George Pal's version a billion times, and we've seen a loyal remake of the War of the Worlds story, with a "virus" killing off the invaders: Independence Day. And it sucked the almighty teat of suckage.

I'd like to see Steve and Tom put a new spin on this one. Watching the same story again and again is pointless to me.

Oh, and I think that's John Lurie doing the voiceover. Great pipes on that guy. He starred in Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law, and also narrates that show "Animal Cops," or whatever it's called. And his voiceover didn't begin, "In a world where the Martians are already here..." which is a plus.

Then at least have the balls to give it a new name to go with the new story.

(That is directed at Hollywood marketing, not you BTW)

has anyone ever made a true to the book version of WoW? I would much rather see a version of that done with modern movie magic tech than this updated version (walkers vs. horsedrawn cannons... cool!)....

Independence Day sucked? In what universe? But that's a topic for another thread.

I'm going to look at any of them with the same criteria I looked at Lord of the Rings - is the movie itself going to be entertaining? If it is, then it's worth my $5.50 at the theater or $3.79 at Hollywood Video or Netflix subscription or whatever I pay to see it.

While I am holding judgement it does look to be a re-make of 50ish movie or was that the 60ish movie, I would like to see more from the book myself.

I am also concerned about that line "They are already here...", just makes me think of shape shifting martians acting human, which they were not.

Hmmmm...not sure what to make of the trailer. Doesn't really grab me but at the same time it doesn't push me away either. I have to admit to being a bit underwhelmed by it.

I'll have to wait for the full trailer to make a better judgement. Speilberg and Crusie aren't enough to make me want to see the film.
