D&D 5E Warlocks seem pointless

"at least 8 hours long, during which the character sleeps or performs light activity"

Those are 2 separate options. Standing watch for no more than 2 hours is an example of light activity. What you are saying is "sleeps and performs light activity of no more than 2 hours," if I read your position correctly. I agree we're getting off track, though.

You’ve just had it clarified in a quotation from the source you originally cited. Why are we still debating?

Because "or" means one or the other but both are not required; it could be 100% performance of light activity to match that requirement. It should read, "a combination of sleep and light activity" to match your interpretation. Either way, I think we're done debating. ;)

…..’and’ would imply that ‘light activity’ was somehow required for a ‘long rest’…in the full sentence. It’s ‘or’ because ‘light activity’ is not required. Indeed, you can only ‘include up to 2 hours’ of it in a long rest. Unless you are an elf.

Your turn.

The only 2 hour stipulation in the rules is attached to the phrase "or standing watch for no more than two hours". The PC could sleep for 8 hours or spend 8 hours reading, talking, eating to complete a long rest per the rule listed. It doesn't say, "and performs no more than 2 hours of light activity: reading, talking, eating, or standing watch."

And yet all the official clarifications we have had since state exactly that they do have no more than two hours light activity (unless you’re an elf). Basically, it’s arguably a poorly constructed sentence - but you’ve still interpreted it incorrectly, regardless.

link, please. I'd be happy to retract my statement. I didn't see a specific reference last time I check the tweets on sleep. I'm going by what's written and what's written is sleep or light activity, and light activity cannot have more than 2 hours of standing watch.

I refer you to the quotations I gave some time ago. It was your own citation which confirmed it!

I went back to the link I didn't notice earlier. That link doesn't state sleep is required for a long rest. However:

Long rest, not sleeping

@yeokaiwei Plaguescarred you can gain the benefits of an extended rest without sleeping. — Mike Mearls (@mikemearls) September 16, 2014

I was going to ask you to provide a link to that - as I don’t think that quote is in context either, and you haven’t actually addressed the other quotes from the other links that refute your points by just quoting something else back instead - but seriously, let’s go to the other thread now if we wish to continue.

EDIT: Actually, lets not.

I’m going to go back on the one rule that is worth quoting after this many posts on the subject: the rule of common sense.

If you want to play your own game your own way then go right ahead, but in my games I think it’s pretty common sense that any group who fails to get some sleep over a 24 hour period is not going to be well rested - regardless of whether they have only been engaging in ‘light activity’ for 8 hours instead.

Indeed, if they prefer to do ‘light activity’ in their designated ‘8 hour rests’, and then try to argue semantics as you have done, I am going to penalise them on the general principle of a lack of common sense. Minus 10 to all rolls ought to do it!
