D&D 5E Warlocks seem pointless

It should be noted that an elf still needs to spend 8 hours in a long rest to receive its benefits. It's just that only four of those hours are needed for the trance. But even non-elves get to spend some of those 8 hours awake.

Really? I was under the impression that an Elven Trance gives an Elf all the benefits of a full, eight hour rest. I figured that was the point of it.

It is stated in the trance that elves get full 8 hour benefit from a 4 hour rest. Id consider that rests the case. The 8 hour requirement is a misconseption in 5e, remnant from third edition.

In 5e class abilities are restored in short or long rest, and short is one hour and long is 8 hours, as defaults.

It is, as with much in this edition, a little fuzzy. The trance ability actually specifies that humans need 8 hours of sleep (and that 4 hours of trance counts as same for elves).

The long rest rules specify that you don't need to sleep at all to benefit from them. You can spend at least 8 hours sleeping OR engaging in light activity (2 hours of which may be spent on watch) AND may spend at least 59 minutes engaging in strenuous activity.

Granted, I can definitely see why someone would interpret all of this differently than I have. Frankly, the designers' intent is a bit unclear, here.

I have a question, though. For those who rule that the trance shortens the long rest time for an elf, do you allow the elf to replace that trance with light activity?

Hmmm, I haven't thought of this before, but I would rule no. It makes sense that these tall creepy aliens have to Trance to regain their whatevers. So it's less time spent, but it's mandatory time spent, whether short or long rests.

I wanna say, thanks to this thread, I've made my first Warlock tonight. We cut off before combat, but he's already so much fun, and I'm absolutely gonna go with Blade Pact.

The character is awesome. He's like a mix between main characters from the Assassin's Creed games, and Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones/Song of Ice And Fire. He's got the Fey Patron, and I chose the Noble background, with the Knight Variant. He's the greatest thing ever. Thank you, various people in this thread.

Yes. I can't see any reason why I shouldn't. (But my only elf in the party is a freaking Drow Assassin...) And he's not made an issue of it.

It must be hard for a Drow to be an assassin, if you think about how many people just expect you to be an assassin anyway. Good luck to that guy.

Yep, a High Elf is probably more likely to get away with it…..

"Oh my god, you must be that Drow assassin."

"Goddammit Phil, I'm the milk man. My son's dating your daughter!"

------------

"What are you doing in my home, assassin? Is the Underdark that cowardly?!"

"Jimmy, I'm your father for cripes sake! And did you say Underdark?! Oh my god!"

This is the AMC drama I want to see. The trials and drama of a single Drow father just trying to live his life.

Aasimar Jedi Knight Warlock (Star Pact Bladelock).

Read minds, manipulate people, and so on.

Summon you Blade, cast your Aasimar's light spell on it so it glows, you can fight in darkness.

Lots of fun.
