Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

Hmm... it's interesting that Commander's Strike doesn't get more powerful at 21st level like the other powers. Unless basic attacks also scale up like the at-will powers do...

Also, it is kinda disappointing that the Warlord seems to be so... melee heavy, even Commander's Strike seems to require him to be in melee to use it. I was kinda hoping to make my first character a Wizard (or perhaps Warlock)/Warlord multiclass. Wonder how much use I'll be able to really get out of the Warlord's powers as a primarily ranged attacker.

Maybe I'm misreading this, but, since it requires a weapon, doesn't it mean BOTH the warlord and the ally attack the target?

It has the oh-so-helpful "Attack" icon next to it, after all.

The warlord "attacks" the target in that he opens up the enemy for his ally's strike. It looks like there's no attack roll except for the ally's, and the warlord deals no damage except for the bonus he provides to his ally.

Ahhhh, but you haven't seen the bard yet. I'm making up one for a 5th-level playtest this afternoon, and he is full of awesomesauce. :D

(This is not helpful, I know. Sorry! ; )

OK..let me rephrase.

SO much better than the 3.x bard. That better? :)

I see it as:
Warlord:"No, dummy! You hit it like THIS!" (Wham)
Ally:"Oh, like this?" (Wham)

The problem there is that there's no attack roll or damage listed for the warlord...

Because the :melee: symbol is part of the statblock, which means its a special melee attack on the part of the Warlord. The basic attack from an ally is the effect.

No, it's not. Copy/pasted from the OP:
Commander's Strike Warlord Attack 1
With a shout, you command an ally to attack.
At-Will Martial, Weapon
Standard Action :melee:
Target: One creature
Attack: An ally of your choice makes a melee basic attack against the target
Hit: Ally's basic attack damage + your Intelligence modifier.

The basic attack from the ally is the attack, not the effect. The warlord is not given a damage, the warlord is not given a target defense.. the warlord is told that he gets to do this at will with a standard action, targetting one creature. Not one adjacent creature, not one creature in melee range. The person executing the attack has to have a weapon, has to use a basic attack, and the attack must be a :melee: attack.

The power you describe would look like this:

Fictional Warlord Attack 1
At-Will Martial, Weapon
Standard Action :melee:
Target: One creature
Attack: STR vs. AC
Hit: Ally may make a basic melee attack against your target, dealing their basic attack damage + your Intelligence modifier.

Hmm, well, I'd like it better if the warlord didn't have to be in melee range to use this. But even if that is the case, give the Warlord a reach weapon, and he can still use it by standing behind the ally.

Now that I understand the power better, I feel the name is wrong.

It should have been called "Go for the eyes, Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!"

All I can say is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the ability.

and you can blame the munchkin and cheese monger in me for it...

Biff the great axe wielding fighter( max str and axe focused...)

and his Pep squad! a team of 4-5 cheerleaders and hangers on that tell him to swing his axe a bunch... and he does.

a fighter with all the attacks for his party in a round...

only problem would be people not near him...unless there is also a power to command someone to make a basic ranged attack... then... THROWING AXES!

That's how I interpret it as well. Like you say, otherwise the warlord would have an attack value listed, nor is there a damage line for him. All he needs is valid line-of-sight on a target and an ally in melee with the target.

Now you understand the true power of cheerleaders!
