D&D 4E We likes our dwarven women kinda furry! (aka 4e beards)

I cannot adequately describe how much I hate the bearded-dwarven-women meme. I could see myself walking out of a game if it turned out that the GM was running things that way, even if I wasn't playing a dwarf. (If I was playing a dwarf and the GM insisted that she had facial hair, he'd be lucky if all I did was walk out.)

Ed Greenwood's 2nd edition Dwarves' Deep mentions that dwarven women do have facial hair. Many don't grow full beards, but those that do will sometimes conceal themselves as males to help hide their identities in human lands. Many dwarven women follow the traditions of the races around them and shave.

So does the 3E Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting: "Some female dwarves of Faerun can grow beards, too, often passing as males among the nondwarves of the surface lands. Dwarven women may choose to shave their beards to match human-style expectations of beauty."

Very similar to your text, in fact.

I only think the joke has any merit in Discworld books, and only because of the growing schism between the old fashioned dwarves and the dwarves that you can tell are female. All other bearded female dwarf jokes can drown in liquid paper for all I care.

I prefer bearded dwarven women (as they wre in 1E), mostly because it halps make the race different from humans. Elves get to be otherworldly and androgynous; dwarves get facial hair and body odor.

Beardless dwarven women are simply catering to masses of female gamers who can't imagine themselves with beards and hence won't play female characters with them.

Do whatever you want in your campaign worlds; in mine all dwarves have beards.

I thank God almighty that that crappy art died long before I started paying D&D.

Showing me a female dwarf in context with a phallus-hatted wizard.... hmm...

I happened to like Jeff Dee art. I particularly love some of his original Dieties and Demigods work. (as well as Villians and Vigilantes).

His clean style and iconic looking archetypes invoke many found memories of OD&D.

Personally I also find it very flavorful for Humans and other races having a hard time telling male and female dwarves apart and great roleplaying opportinities for a male dwarf character to prefer beardless or bearded females.

A little female facial hair isn't the end of the world. Some of you guys are acting as though you've found out your girlfriend has webbed toes, or a lisp, or freckles, or something truly horrifying. A braided beard can be quite adorable on a sexy dwarven warrior - if it's done right, she doesn't even need to wear a top. ;)
