"weapon shift" the spell

The spell " weapon shift" says you can change a weapon into the form of another, but does it actually change the Characteristics of the the weapon.

Say spear does (1d8 dam, x3 crit, range 20ft.) changed into a great sword (2d6 dam, 19-20/x2 crit) or does it retain the spear damage and crit, but it's just a different form.

Why would your "spear" that is physically a Great Sword in every way still have the statistics of a spear? Why would you even use the spell if it just makes your weapon LOOK different? *Facepalm*

The spell description doesn't qualify or make any exceptions to the word "transform," so I'd say yes, it actually changes the weapon's game statistics -- both appearance and function. If you transformed it into something you're proficient in, you're proficient in it now, etc. etc.
