What are the Game Systems offered?

What game systems and variants are out there for those wanting to adventure in the modern setting? I can think of

d20 modern
d20 Cthulu (sort of, but definitely a niche market)

What else is there, and what do you like / not like about the systems you know about?

Spycraft 2.0 (and also Spycraft 1.0)

There's like a GURPS book for the Modern setting.

RPGObjects' Modern System (technically, this is the OGC portions of d20 Modern with certain RPGObjects staples incorporated)

Haven: City of Violence (comes in standalone game and d20 Modern versions)

... that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I like Savage Worlds for my current modern game. I'm running their Tour of Darkness setting in the Viet Nam (Weird) War. I like SW because it's really easy to run, but it gives the players enough options to make it fun to play.

  • d20 Modern*
  • All Flesh Must Be Eaten
  • Angel: The Roleplaying Game
  • Buffy: The Roleplaying Game
  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Call of Cthulhu d20*
  • Frenzy: Fast Action!**
  • Kult
  • Mutants & Masterminds*
  • Nobilis
  • Principia Malefex
  • Spycraft 2.0*
  • Stray Bullet**
  • Witchcraft
  • World of Darkness

The above list contains only standalone games, currently in print, that have a modern setting by default. Games marked with an asterisk are d20 System and/or OGL games. Gmaes markes with two asterisks are available for free download.

Note that there are also dozens of non-setting specific systems such as The Window, GURPS, Rolemaster, HERO, EABA, Theatrix, Formless, BESM, Savage Worlds, and so on that have no default setting and can easily be used to run games in any time period.

As to what I like? All of the above, with the possible exception of HERO, which demands a lot of work in return for very little payoff where non-fantastic settings are concerned.

There's literally 100s of game systems for the modern setting. A quick way to look would be to go to RPG.net and do a seach for "Modern" games in their review section.

For d20, you basically have 3 choices.

d20 Modern
Spycraft 2.0
plain d20 tweaked for the modern-ish era. (Most of the stuff by Hogshead would fall into this category; as would Pinnacle's d20 stuff)
