Well, I just gave up reading Dragon Wing (book 1 of The Deathgate Cycle). I tried, really, but I just can't get into this. I don't like the characters, I find the plot relatively uninteresting, and while I have no problem with flying island settings--I've created one myself for writing and gaming--I find a number of the aspects of the setting to be very annoying.
I've recently started The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley. It's a complete reinterpretation of the basic Robin Hood premise. Only a chapter into it, but it seems cool so far. I'm not 100% thrilled with the way she writes dialogue--I much prefer realistic, conversational dialogue than attempts at making the characters sound "medieval"--but at least she does it well, so I can live with it.
(For the record, what I mean by conversational is dialogue like that found in Eddings' Belgariad or his Sparhawk trilogies, or Brust's Vlad Taltos novels. I'm not talking about modern street slang, which would be awful in a fantasy; I just want it to read like real people are speaking it.)
