What Classes are Missing?

When talking about a new class, two things are important:
- Represents a fantasy archetype (in a broad sense that includes everything from tolkinesque and fairy tales to steam punk and oriental settings)
- Unique mechanics

Don't mean to be overly harsh but I think this is entirely your opinion, and quite frankly one that discourages creativity. Relying on current fantasy archetypes without attempting to create new ones is short-sighted.

I think its important to think about new ways of doing things within a relatively new system. Sure, things like the necromancer should be brought into the fold. But I love the idea of similar classes (like the rogue and the assassin) as well relatively new concepts (like martial controllers and ranged defenders.) Otherwise, you may not come across the new fantasy archetype.

Anything else is unnecessary stifling of creativity.

and sorry Piratecat but i have to do this (mainly because I'm 99% sure its actually not sarcastic this time.)
A ranged defender is a controller.

For the record, there will never be a Martial Controller. . .(and some other stuff)

All due respect, but right off the bat you are pretty dismissive of other people's ideas. You discount out of hand a whole bunch of classes, simply because you can't see how their mechanics would work.

Well, I think we will see plenty before 4e runs it's course, and much of it will probably be new things that you may not expect to be coming.

WRT your claims about artificers, wizards, and druids just needing certain sets of powers to fill in different roles. . .sure. If you gave the wizard an at-will that did 5d6 damage to every enemy in sight, he becomes a striker too. What people want is a new class that functions differently. Your dismissal of that is kind of short-sighted.

All that being said, this is all just a fun thought excercise anyways. I don't think anyone here is seriously looking for a fan-made or flavor-shifted Necromancer (though the Shaman hack was a cool idea), or anything else, really. Just having a discussion.

Too similar to an Invoker, especially with the Convenant of Wrath. Note that the Avenger has a few ranged implement powers for some strange reason. It's possible that we'll see ranged Avenger builds at some point (Divine Power 2?)

Actually, I think you can already build an Avenger that can go ranged for a battle or two every day at paragon levels. Start with Glaring Admonition, add Livedrinking Covenant (ranged encounter, benefits from oath), throw in Radiant Beaconing.

You can't do a ranged weapon Avenger -- as the only ranged weapon power they have is Focused Fury (which is pretty terrible--they should have had it be usable as a basic and it would have been decent), but you can make an avenger who usually sits back and blasts stuff with good-effect Avenger encounter powers (which -if- you can your oath on are pretty good, as they usually have useful effects).
