D&D 5E What CR is THis Bad Boy?

Zardnaar

Legend
This is something I threw together in around 5 minutes by copy/paste another thing I was working on hence the abbreviated stats. The idea is a BBEG henchmen of Tharizdun to be added to an encounter in PotA for a 5 member level 7 party. Think NPC gladiator on steroids (+3 CR).

Ezoran II CR 8?

Human Male
Medium Humanoid (chaotic evil)

Armor Class 18(unarmoured defence)

Hit Points 159 (23d8+69)

Speed 60 ft

Saving Throws Str +6, Dex +7, Con +6, Int +7, Cha +7 Wis +7

Skills Acrobatics +10, Athletics +8, Perception +10, stealth +10

Damage Immunity Poison

Spell Resistance Ezoran has advantage on saves vs magic

Condition Immunities charmed, frightened and poisoned

Senses passive Perception 20

Languages Common

Stunning Strike (recharge 5-6) DC 15 (as monk)
Patient Defense (recharge 4-6) as Monk ability
Deflect Missiles (as monk) 1d10+8

Multiattack. Ezoran makes attacks 4 melee attacks or uses death whirlwind. One of those attacks can be with Thud.
Melee Attack- Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon attack+7 to hit, reach 5’, one target. Hit 11 (1d10+4 magic) bludgeoning damage
Pummel +7 Melee Weapon attack+7 to hit, reach 5’, one target. Hit 11 (1d8+5 magic) bludgeoning damage plus 1d6 necrotic

Death Whirlwind Ranged spell attack+7 to hit, 60/120, one target. Hit 1d8+4 (1d8+5 magic) necrotic damage. All targets within range.

Thud (Very Rare)
Thud is a staff made out of shadow wood- an oak from the shadowfell. It is a +1 weapon that deals an extra 1d6 necrotic damage. Once per long rest it can be used to cast spiritual guards (necrotic damage only). Thud has the finesse property and can only be attuned by a spellcaster.

First, Defensive CR: 6/7 (you are 2hp away from 7) + 1.5 for being 3 AC over Immunity to several conditions.. well skip

Offensive CR Damage output 11x3 +14.5x1 for 47.5 DPR Putting him on the low end of CR 7. +1 over to hit for maybe .5 CR.

CR8 is pretty close going by the book.

can only be used with Thud? Pummel +7 Melee Weapon attack+7 to hit, reach 5’, one target. Hit 11 should be 9 (1d8+5 magic) bludgeoning damage plus 1d6 necrotic assuming necrotic is from Thud

Death Whirlwind Ranged spell attack+7 to hit, 60/120, one target. typo? only targets one creature? why would he ever use it? Hit 1d8+4 (1d8+5 magic) necrotic damage. All targets within range.

EDITED for mflayermonk's catch!

Defensive CR 11
159 HP ==> base CR 6
effective AC 22 = 18 + 2 Magic Resistance + (4/2=2) Patient Defense* EDIT: +4 Six Proficient Saves
so bump CR up to 11

*I evaluated Patient Defense similarly to the goblin's Nimble Escape JUST for defensive purposes (i.e. +4 AC), but since it's only active half the time (given recharge 5-6), I reduced it to just +2 AC for calculation purposes.

Offensive CR 7

Damage & Assumed actions in 3-rounds:
Round #1. Patient Defense (bonus action) Cast spirit guardians (action) 2* 13.5 = 27 damage
Round #2. Multiattack (action). Unarmed (Stunning Strike) 11.5 & stun + Unarmed 11.5 + Unarmed 11.5 + Pummel w/ Thud 13 + spirit guardians 2 * 13.5 = 74.5
Round #3. Assuming spirit guardians ends due to his concentration being broken. Unarmed (Stunning Strike) 11.5 & stun + Unarmed 11.5 + Unarmed 11.5 + Pummel w/ Thud 13 = 47.5

DPR = (27 + 74.5 + 47.5) / 3 = 49.66 ==> base CR 7 (on the cusp of 8)
effective attack bonus +7
leave at CR 7

Total CR 9 = (11 + 7) / 2

CR 8 looks good. CR 9 is right.

Defensive CR 9
159 HP ==> base CR 6
effective AC 22 = 18 + 2 Magic Resistance + (4/2=2) Patient Defense*
so bump CR up to 9

*I evaluated Patient Defense similarly to the goblin's Nimble Escape JUST for defensive purposes (i.e. +4 AC), but since it's only active half the time (given recharge 5-6), I reduced it to just +2 AC for calculation purposes.

He also has proficiency in all saves, another +4 AC adjustment (so +2 CR).
CR 11 defense + CR 7 offense = 18/2. Total CR 9

The cr 8 was just a guesstimate. It was a rush job. The PC's Monk managed to stun it twice when its dodge bonus action thing did not recharge.

Bit strong for CR8 weak CR 9?
