As a player, what do you look for from the recruitment to in character play in a good Play by Post game.

What makes a play by post game fun for you as a player?

What I favor is a great roleplay time and that the stroy is more centered on teh character background... be different of a computer game like Never Winter night and you've got me.

I like to find a game where the rules, plot hook, and setting all interest me. I mention Rules simply because there are some games where that has been a turn off (Pecuiar house rules for example). I tend to be somewhat RP heavy, but some combat is always fun too.

If I'm familiar with the GM, that's a plus. Also, if I'm familiar with several other players, that's also a plus.

I prefer a game that is core rules only with a point buy no higher than 32. I like to have fun gaming and I don't feel I need a bunch of excess numbers and sourcebooks to do it.

After that, my biggest concern is whether the DM seems motivated and whether the other players are reasonable folk (fun to be around, very good roleplayers, and not overly inclined to munch out their characters and equipment).

Next on the list is the type of adventure.

Basically, is the DM going to stick around? Are the players the game seems to be attracting quality? Is the game set up to limit or encourage min/maxing? What's the setting and adventure type? Those are my determining factors for interest.

The "into it" factor.

If I feel like everybody is into it (the game), then I'm probably going to have fun. I'm not too picky about setting or rules or what not. I just want a DM and players who seem to be enjoying themselves and are showing it.

For me it's the setting, the adventure and the play style. I like characters with a solid ‎background. For this the setting as well as the adventure or plot hook need to be rich, detailed ‎and inspiring. Also I like to see the characters background reflected back later in the ‎adventure.‎

Committed players, a committed DM, and no characters based around a "look at meeeeee!" concept. All the players should have an equal part in the adventure, not be one player's sidekicks. Likewise, disruptive characters (or even worse, players) are a big issue for me.

I don't love a million house rules, but so long as they're pretty easy to understand, it's not a super-big deal. The closer the game sticks to the rules in the SRD, so I can look things up (and participate) from work, the better.

Beyond that, it really depends on the individual adventure and sometimes the setting.

But the most important thing: A fast rate of posting. I know that stuff happens, but if you look at how many pbp games begin, compared to how few make it even to page 10 of a thread, it's really depressing. The less often people post, the more likely (it seems) that the adventure will just fizzle out.

When I run my Ptolus game later this summer, I may try a hard requirement of two posts on every weekday and one post per weekend day and screen accordingly. I'm not sure if it'll work, but it can't do worse than so many others here do.

I like seeing an interesting story, but if it's too long, I won't read it.

I don't like House Rules, but I'll tolerate a few (in a PbP game, I feel they just complicate things).

I like relatively high point buys (30 to 40). It doesn't unbalance the game and it allows a variety of character concepts.

I don't mind if the game is slow-paced if it's interesting.

I don't mind if levelling takes forever, unless we're low level (Staying at 1st level for a year, or 2nd level for a year kind of sucks... I want to have a few class abilities to play with).

I don't have to know the GM or the players, but if they present themselves as interesting/good sense of humor/good roleplayer then I'll be more likely to enjoy the game (sometimes, the OOC banter is as good or better than the game).

- Fast post rate.
- Lotsa combat. But with some good RP!!
- No wierdo characters.
- Small party.
- Fun players.
- Fun DM.
- Reasonable point buy limit (30+).
- Not too many house rules.
- Low(ish) level.
