What method of measurement do you prefer?

I agree. I also have an awful lot of very pretty, very useful, very reuseable maps that were expensive and that are on a square grid.

You were being sarcastic. There's nothing wrong with saying "we want to minimize square counting in this game", in and of itself. While I don't think I need 1-2-1-2 to be happy, I can see why others would.

The switch would be to have the jumping rules approximate how far perpendicular to the axis of motion the character travels without needing to plot parabolas.

Like the rules do now.

Heh. I did overstate my case a bit. And movement could definitely stand to at least be clarified... but the 1-1 thing is just something I can't wrap my brain around. The artifacts of the solution seem far worse to me than the artifacts of the problem. I guess it's because my group all "gets" the existing system. Seriously, after explaining it once to the guys new to it, I don't think it's ever even slowed us down.
 


I hate the grid. It turns RPGs into boardgames. The only reason for the grid is AOOs and if you could knock out those, then you can go back to No Grid / Mental or No Grid / Rough Estimate via Rulers just fine.

My favorite way of playing RPGs is Representational Figures. You place the figs around and everyone has a general idea of 1 inch / X feet and we move stuff about without a ruler and just measure by eyeballs or fingers.
 


I hate hexes for many practical reasons. Let it be known that I played and ran GURPS for five years and near the end I and the other GMs changed groups to a grid. As a GM I like mapping out my dungeons in advance, I hate having to remember how my hex mat is oriented, or buying landscape hex paper when I have a portrait mat. I also hat the fact that I cannot draw a 20x20 room and have it not look like a rectangle. I also cannot wrap my head around the fact that in one orientation a room has x number of hexes in it and in the other it has y.

All of you hex fans have some good points (and fun in your games I am sure), and I may even think about breaking out the old hex mat if I ever run an entirely wilderness campaign. As the Dungeon/Urban setting is my favorite, I doubt it will be soon.

For now I will not run a game on a mat made up of shapes I cannot make a perfect Polyhedron of.
