What have you kept from 3.0 in your 3.5 games ?

I know "3.0" is not quite the proper name for the 3rd Edition, but it get's my point accross quickly.

We understand. Feel free to ignore the anal.

Varoious bits I keep:

Spells: I started a thread over on rules for this topic:
http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=83187

Cover & Concealment and Face & Reach: I pretty much use the old rules.

Some feats:
In particular spell focus (nerfing them was overkill since the other components in the massive combo like archmage had already been nerfed) and deflect arrows.

I had some issue with weapon size rules, but I eventually decided that it's easier to house rule out the illogical consequences of the 3.5 weapon size rules than all the parts of the 3.0 rules that need updated. Still, when updating 3.0 classes, this is a constant point of aggravation.

NO POKEMOUN... er, no magically appearing paladin's mounts. Paladins are not summoners.

Jot me down for wounding weapons, too.

Two handed weapons do not give x2 damage for power attack... that would be a one feat solution to high hardness obstacles, not to mention it plays havoc with my massive damage house rules. I figure x1.5 is sufficient compensation, and in line with strength bonus mods.

I don't collapse all "+X" Damage Reduction into "magic" and "epic", though I still use the other new categories.

The Scry skill (after I went and gave it other nifty uses, like seeing auras or dimensional ripples, I would not suppress it and be left without any other skill to fold it into, plus I find the idea of the Will save silly).

That's a pretty cool idea.

I kept it in my Second World game because multiple Second World Warden concepts rely on the skill, and I feel that the Book of Eldritch Might III handled the problems with scry spells without kicking the skill to the curb.

There are two I am really die hard about: Imp. Crit and Keen Edge stacking and upping most of the 1 min/level spells to 10 min/level. I also use 3.0 sheild instead of 3.5, I liked the battlefield positioning tactics it creates

Man, was I happy to see the Scry go the hell away with 3.5. Talk about useless and poorly implemented skill. Though Gez's implementation sounds much cooler, but even if I were to use that, it's so massively better than the 3.0 version that I don't think it truly qualifies.

Let's see here...

We've kept the 3.0 creature sizes (no square horses).

We've kept the 3.0 weapon sizes (no Large shortswords or Small greatswords)

We use both the 3.0 and 3.5 animal buff spells (choosing between long duration but random effect, or short duration but set benefit)

IN terms of other spells, not much. We still use Command with "any single word" rather than the menu of options you got with 3.5. We also allow Polymorph to grant extraordinary abilities, but I can't recall off the top of my head if that was a feature of Polymorph 3.0.

keen & improved crit stack
buffs as 3.0 but 10 min/level
no weapon size
darkness = darkness v3.5
deeper darkness = darkness v3.0
spell focus/greater spell focus each +2
PA as 3.0

That's what I can remember at the moment

About the only thing that comes to mind is the Perform skill. I know it's not realistic to b able to have so many performance skills, but:

  1. this is a game where people conjure monsters from thin air... what's realistic mean?;
  2. it's a flavour skill -- rarely will a game really hinge on the Perform skill;
  3. the implementation doesn't have any real impact on the one character class that uses the skill -- Bards get by with a single Perform skill anyway.
A stupid idea, implemented to handle real-life musicians who felt devalued by the skill. Keep the 3.0 single skill all the way!
