I love Cherryh's SF, but it's usually so psychologically convoluted, I can see it becoming garbage quite easily.
That's also why something like the Foreigner books would do better broken up into multiple movies or a series of some kind- that would allow those responsible to have a chance at doing justice to the underlying stories.
A single movie just doesn't have the time.
And more aren't!Lots of short stories are successfully translated into movies.
One of Sci-fi's greatest short-stories is Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall", later expanded to novel length with Robert Silverberg's help.
It has the misfortune of having been made into not one but TWO terrible movies.
On a certain level, Pitch Black with Vin Diesel does a much better job of handling some of the issues raised in Asimov's story than do the movies made directly from it.
