I chose Greyhawk, because it's the one I'm most familiar with. I would have selected Wilderlands, except that I haven't seen the revised stuff as yet, and there are a lot of locations that are pre-defined in the setting, which may not allow it to serve well as the generic setting of choice.

I'd like to know more about Aereth, but I haven't forked over the money for it yet, on account of it is rather expensive. Now that it's been out for a year, perhaps I can find it cheaper through other sources.

Enjoy,
Flynn

DCC's Gazetter of the Known Realms wins my vote for a few reaons:

1) It is generic, vanilla D&D
2) It is well written
3) It isn't bogged down with decades of canon, which I feel leaves the slate wide open to take it in any direction you'd like

I accidentally voted for Kalamr, but I meant Greyhawk all the way, even though I wouldn't describe it as generic.

It's kind of like the Forgotten Realms would be if it wasn't populated with radioactive supermen! :p

I voted for Kingdoms of Kalamar for a couple of reasons:

1) The physical geography is realistic, and the attention to detail is very well done.

2) The way they have structured the pantheon is simply genius. There are a bunch of gods, and they have different names in different cultures. Some cultures might choose certain aspects, and particular deities, but there isn't a separate pantheon for each races.

3) Much like the Living Greyhawk Ghazateer, the Kingdoms of Kalamar book has very little in the way of stats in it.

I'll also give a nod to Ptolus, as it is a setting based on the assumptions in the core rules.

I was always pretty keen on the way Mystara was set up, with the Gazetteers. Any one of those manuals gave a complete campaign area, and they could be combined or altered as needed. I'm not so keen on what eventually happened to Mystara, though. (Wrath of the Immortals, followed by the dumbed down AD&D boxed sets)

If you were looking for a good place to set a fairly generic, RAW-style game with elves, dwarves, knights, monks and sorcerers, where would you set it? Nothing too sinister (Scarred Lands), Odd (Eberron), or involving a lot of rule-changes (Midnight).

Where I would want to set it would be Scarred Lands, though you've disqualified it for reasons I'm not too sure I understand. Too "Sinister"? Why is that a problem? Adventure is just hardship viewed adversely, and sinister villains give the heroes something to struggle with.
