I usually play a dex based half-elf Oath of the Ancients palidan with the spy background. Getting persuasion, deception, stealth, and thieves tools from my background, class and racial skills I can be useful in both the exploration and social interaction part of the game, and with a crossbow and a rapier I am ready for both melee and ranged combat. With my spells and lay on hands I can heal and buff. Regardless of what kinds of characters every one else brought, I can fill just about any missing role at the table, but without being so good that I step on the toes of anyone who brought a more specialized character.

My favorite character has been the one that bears my name, mostly because of the rebuild rules allowing me to switch my human feat.

Variant Human Fighter 1/Fiend Tomelock 3/Fire Draconic Sorcerer X
Str 8 Dex 14 Con 16 Int 8 Wis 10 Cha 16
Feat: Magic Initiate (Eldritch Blast/GFB/Hex) @ 1st level -> Mobile @ 2nd (to counter heavy armor speed penalty)
Fighting Style: Defense
Tome cantrips: Sacred Flame, Shillelagh, Spare the Dying
Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Book of Ancient Secrets
Metamagic: Quickened, Twinned

The whole build is an armored Eldritch Spammer who has Shillelagh+GFB/BB in the back pocket for when stuck in melee range, which Mobile synergizes with as the escape mechanism.

Ive got several characters I rarely get to play (normally Im the dm)

I have Varon Cadorna (yes he IS distantly related to that other one). Hes a Cloak out of Mulmaster and a Necromancer who specialises in internment and study of the dead. (I use medicine as his autopsy skills and the like). Hes generally creepy but can be creepy charming when he tries to be. I generally use a raspy voice with him until my voice dosnt like my anymore

I have Valeria a former Zhentilar (Not Zhentarim.. she was a Soldier in the Armed forces of Zhentil Keep). She is a gruff larger women who uses a sword and shield and is very much a Mercenary.

Probably my current favorite is Brother Jarom, a Monk from thE Monastery of the Unwavering Eye (an LG themed Monastery of Savras) who believe it is their duty to intervene in the fate of certain people they meet (Savras being the God most associated with Divination and fate). It is a fairly small Monk Order based out of Calimshan.

One of my favorites has to be my Fighter / Sorcerer Dragonborn. He is a red Dragonborn with blue draconic sorcerer powers. He started with a level of fighter to give him access to heavy armor and defense fighting style. So he is a heavily armored sorcerer with a bunch of close range spells. I also flavored it so all of his spells are cast out of his mouth. I've even killed a couple undead by casting Create Bonfire and grappling/shoving them inside of it.

Here's the short version of his background: he ran away from home because he was afraid he wouldn't live up to his family name/expectations. He ended up stowing away on a ship to distant lands. However, his ship was attacked by priates and he was captured as exotic "booty". Eventually, he convinced the pirate captain to let him join the crew. Later, the captain was captured and the crew disbanded. He became a wandering adventurer after that, and began to unlock his magical potential.

He highly values his freedom and joined the Zhentarim because they preach that "you are the master of your own destiny". And since he's a sorcerer and not a wizard, he doesn't entirely realize how shady the Zhentarim can be. Plus his pirate background makes some questionable operations seem normal. But he's not a bad guy, just a misunderstood giant. He's big and scary and has a bad rap, but he really just wants friends.

He is a lot of fun to play; whether I'm crushing people with giant earthen hands in combat (EE origin) or stiffing my tab at the local tavern. Although, with a Dragonborn pirate, his tab might go from minor offense to felony one of these days...

Me too - but I'm trying to be a Warlord replacement. Inspiring Word feat, rapier, longbow, whip, party buff spells, at L11 and moving through Tiamat, all the auras grant me - and anybody brave enough to stand next to me - Resist(Almost Everything The DM Can Throw At Me).

I used the whip in my first fight (Murder at Balder's Gate) when I stood in as second for a duel, and gave a snotty aristocrat teen half my age a Whipping, and made him tell me Who's His Daddy (instead of saying "Uncle").

Do I take care of my charges? You bet - I jumped into 30 feet of water wearing Plate Metal Armor (and a long rope) to save our hallucinating rogue from drowning. I got myself curbstomped into the pavement so our Wizard and Ranger could run away from a Troll and a pack of hounds (but they caught the Ranger alas). And I almost got myself killed again - twice in 24 hours - trying (but failing) to save our Cleric from Sgt. Othelstan.

For REAL AL adventures, I have a wood elf Monk2/Rogue1
- He is the Designated Scout. Expertise (Stealth and Perception). I got to borrow a Cloak of Elvenkind for one adventure and was almost invisible !
- I was the only character who could chase a Giant Frog through a marsh (it was trying to eat our party's Drow while Dashing away)
- I've been able to use Thieves' Cant to deliver a secret message in the middle of a crowd - to the embarrassment of a would-be stickyfingers PC.
- Due to Cartographers' Tools and the Outlander background feature, I come away from any adventure where I didn't get anything else of note with a Map of Where I've Been Lately. That ought to be good for some cash eventually.
- Despite having CHR 8, I was able to persuade a female wood elf into letting me examine her heritage longbow. I remarked that one rarely sees another of our kind out in the world these days.
