What I've Learned From Painting My First Mini in 7+ Years

Mini Eyes

I paint minis for table use at games, not for shows and such, so this might not work for you. But, I get *great* results with doing eyes using Micron pens. I just paint the whites in-- usually easy following the mini's outline, then add the iris with a dot from a Micron pen. Easy-peasy. And, it is really easy to add directional views, which can be a cool effect; like, I might place the irises in the upper right-hand corner for an archer mini, so that he is looking off in the distance. Much easier to pull that off with a pen instead of brush IMO.

Thought I might post to give a bit of an update. I've been a little busy of late so the painting has fallen by the wayside for the most part. I still haven't finished the first mini I painted. I decided to ditch the drybrushing on the cloak and go back and do some layered highlights instead. Even if it doesn't look perfect it will be better for my painting skills in the long run.

I also have a few minor details to go back and paint. Mainly just changing the colours of a couple of small things so that there is a bit more colour variation in the model.

While I haven't finished the first model I did start painting a Blood Bowl model. For those of you that don't know what it is, Games Workshop released a game many years ago that is basically American football with a fantasy style.

The mini I have painted is an Orc Lineman. It is a plastic mini that I got with the boxed set about 10 years ago. It is a pretty simple sculpt but that is probably good for me at the moment. So far I've done a basecoat and then a bit of shading (which I found is basically like 2 basecoats, except that you leave some of the darker first basecoat showing in the recesses to give the mini shading). It takes a bit longer to do it that way (rather than doing a basecoat in a mid colour and adding in shading after) but I have found that it looks much better in the end.

I'll see if I can post some pictures of both the minis over the weekend.
