I'm running a Lovecraftian setting where Dragonborn were born to humans, but began changing at puberty, and were seen as a good omen from the gods. Tieflings were also born to humans and changed at puberty, but now look more Lovecraftian (Tentacles instead of hair and a slight greenish hint to the skin) and viewed as a bad omen from the gods.

The group so far:
Dragonborn Paladin (Dead)
Elven Ranger
Dwarven Warlord
Dwarven Fighter
Human Wizard
Tiefling Artificer

Go team Attrition! the sheer amount of Con healing (All have 14 plus) and AC (Warlords in scale) we have makes us kinda formidable though the lack of damage we can pull out at the mo (level 2) is a tiny Flaw.

Hey! No fair!

You're playing a Minotaur and don't allow MM races? I'm PMing your players right now

Or what we’re seeing here is also an edition divide. The new races were certainly an issue for some 4e sceptics. By definition, all the voters in this poll played at least some 4e but that may not be the case for the other poll (where db was the most hated race).

That's an interesting point.

I didn’t vote here because I ‘m not sure my group’s short experience (2 sessions) with 4e really counts, but there was certainly no dragonborn (or short race) in sight. All human, pointy ears and a tiefling.

Funny, I think it’s precisely because of the look and the boring as hell klingon vibe that many people hate dragonborn. The tiefling art is pretty bad too, but not as dorky as db, imo.

I think it's a reason for DMs to hate them more than players, though, I really do. Players, at least some of them, in my experience, tend to like simple, obvious hooks and "like Klingons but with breathing fire" is pretty simple.

I think the Tiefling art in 4E is overall worse than the DB art. There are a couple of pieces where the DBs look good, usually when O'Connor is drawing them and they're seen from below and the front. Whereas I don't see a single piece in 4E where the Tieflings really look good. None where they look as terrible as the 4E PHB cover admittedly, either.

I'm not sure it would be the case if there was another core monster race or strong race to split the vote.

Yeah, but if there was another monster race, people might hate on it even more than they do the DBs, depending on what it was.

The campaign I play in has:
Dragonborn Cleric/Ranger (me)
Dragonborn Ranger
Dwarven Fighter
Halfling Warlock
Tiefling Rogue

We're not missing the humans at all and have no hate for the new races. The tiefling player always kind of likes to play the dark/evil background type of characters, so that works for him. Dragonborn are not my usual cup of tea (elven rogues are actually), but I thought they would mix well with a cleric of the god of war and they were a nice bit of fresh air.

All in all, I think the new races will do fine in our games...

Interesting results so far:
- Human is still favored. Probably no surprise...
- Dragonborn is well recieved.
- Looks like Fey-Stepping magical Elves (Eladrin) are slightly more puplar then the hunting forest dweller Elf.
- Tiefling are not as popular as Dragonborn? Is it the Angst? The changed fluff and illustration?
- Half_x_ races are not so welcome (Half-Elf and Halfling) and are used less.
- MM races are used.
- People are already homebrewing races! I should have asked for specifics!

In my 4e Planescape game, I have one human (fan-made necromancer class), but no other PHB races. The other three players are all members of homebrew races: two nymphs (warlord and fey warlock) and one illithid (wizard).

The group I play in
  • dragonborn paladin of Bahamut
  • human warlord
  • eladrin warlock (fey pact)
  • dwarf wizard (my character)
We also have an elf ranger (two blade fighting style) "on hold" (the player is away for the summer).

The group I DM for:
  • dwarf fighter (KotS pregen, no less)
  • human rogue
  • elf ranger (archer)
  • human cleric (originally a half-elf star-pact warlock, but player decided to change characters)

Group 1:

  • Dragonborn Fighter
  • Human Ranger
  • Human Wizard
  • Dwarf Paladin
  • Dwarf Cleric
  • Tiefling Warlock

Group 2:

  • Human Warlock
  • Human Cleric
  • Human Warlord
  • Dwarf Fighter
  • Dragonborn Wizard
  • Half-Elf Ranger
  • Halfling Rogue
