D&D 5E (2024) What Rare Item to Hand Out? Lvl4

So DMG recommends 1 rare item can be handed out. Im thinking thongs through.

Martuals have+1 weapons, there's a +1 shield as well, and spellcasters have bupkiss. Ive sone uncommons to hand out so ill probably do a wand and amulet of devotion.

Roll percentile dice. Check all four lists in the DMG for that roll on the rare magic items table, and pick the one that is best for them, this is (to me at least) a good compromise between true random and picking what would be best for them; and also ensures a better chance that their rare item might be a consumable.

In the medium term the rogue and barbarian will need better weapons to not be completly outclassed by the casters.


I agree that +2 weapons are a bit boring, but thats just how it is.

Of course belt of giants strength is also god, but there a paladin profits more than the others and we dont want the 2 pure martials be outclassed even more.

Runestaffs would be items for spellcasters that would add to "spells known" number for spellcasters.
It would give versatility within certain theme for spellcaster that uses the runestaff.
every staff would give 2 cantrips and 2 spells from level 1 to level 5, similar how cleric domains work.

Item:
Runestaff, rare, requires attunement by spellcaster,
Provides spells known from the items list,
Every spell(except cantrips) must be cast with casters spell slots.
Staff provides for Somatic and non costly Material components that are consumed with casting while in hand.

Ive got similar ones. Usually +1 weapon, lvl 1 spell or cantrip extra 1d4 damage.

A rogue could benefit from a +1 dagger that lets him misty step 1/day or 1/rest. 1/rest is a bit more powerful, but depends on your game.

I would NOT do the +2 items, not for a lvl 4 2024 party, your just compounding your problems as a DM. +1 breastplate for the cleric would be an easy one, but might get claimed by the barbarian.

Either that or a brass horn of Valhalla. Just because.
