D&D General What spells should be on the rangers list?

The ranger doesn't use magic because it's convenient.

The ranger uses magic because it's required.

Rangers deal with magical monsters and terrain. Tracking and pursuing fey or dragons or other D&D monsters safely more or less require the blatant supernatural.
So, do Fighters and yet no one has really come forward and said that a Fighter should use magic to deal with magical monsters. Why do the Fighters get to ignore this requirement? :p

And what about the Rogue and the Barbarian?

They use magic weapons and armor since their role is primarily combat.

Rangers use spells because magical tools are not available normally.

But I am in the opinion that Rangers would be best suited as Infusion users instead of Spellcasters.

IMHO, Rangers would have a utility belt.

With utility belt, Rangers will crush the Super Friends their Favored Enemies.

Rangers also use magic weapons and armor when they find themselves in the middle of a combat situation. Most Ranger spells are utility or buff spells. They have only a couple offense spells that can aid them against a magical threat.

Again I point you to the A5e spell-less ranger. Magic is not required.
Again I will say like every time you bring this up.

  1. A5e was specially written for the Ranger to not need magic
  2. Because the A5e Ranger is a green colored Fighter.
The A5e Ranger doesn't fulfill the full Ranger fantasy as much a core Core 5e Ranger. The 5e ranger is just a little too weak.

Exactly.

Rangers literally have magic because tool use beyond Tier 1 are all magic items and Rangers cannot dictate their availability to magic items.

Rangers literally have healing Magic, sensory magic, animal magic, plant magic, and divination only because people thought that these are or Ranger features but you literally could not do them without casting spells in the first three editions of the game.

A ranger literally could not heal themselves or talk to animals/plants on the field without magic for 30 years.

Whereas the D&D Ranger since 1e has always had access to spellcasting.

If the 5e ranger is just a little too weak, then does it really fulfill whatever Ranger fantasy some of its' fans want from it by making it into a Half-caster?

50% power is better than 0%.

The 5e ranger has access to the spells that cover all* the Ranger fantasy. However many of them are too weak as they were written for Druids.

The A5E ranger has access to knacks. But their knacks don't cover all* of the Ranger fantasy nor does it scale. But doing so would require major supplementary work and very likely break the class.

*Once you take in basic supplements.

I disagree, and really see this as belittling the A5e design work. "Ranger" is not an inherently magical concept, so IMO it doesn't need spells to feel like a ranger. You personally may feel a Ranger isn't a Ranger without magic, but that is your subjective point of view.

By the way, what color fighter are paladins, berserker, adepts, and marshals in A5e? All of those guys get through combat mostly through physical fighting, so they must all be shades of fighter right?

They included a Ranger archetype with spellcasting (the wildborn) specifically for those like you who apparently see a spell-less ranger as a fighter with a nice coat of paint.
