The thread is kind of explicit in the title. I’ve been in weeknight sessions that started at 7pm, 9pm, even 11pm and went long into the night. But I also played alongside folks in those sessions from other time zones that started at maybe 3 or 4pm in the afternoon.

Let’s assume for the sake of simplicity we’re talking about mid week. So excluding Fridays which can sometimes feel like the weekend and Mondays with that back-to-work long day feeling. Though of course lots of people don’t work those shift patterns.

Mid to long term means 6 weeks to a year or anything in between, but not a one one off. Most people can stomach anything for a very limited time.

My group typically gets together on our Discord channel to roleplay 5e around 8:30pm EST (7:30 CST, most of my group lives in this time zone) and will role-play until at least 11:30pm EST. However, we have had sessions run close to 1 am EST in the morning because we didn't want to stop in the middle of a fight. :p

I picked 8-11 so that dinner is wrapped up and cleaned up and the wife has gone to bed. There is no interruptions after 8pm. I think 7 would be better in case things ran a little late and I could be in bed for 11. Also do not know if after the game, I would be more awake and need some time to cool off or relax to go to bed.

Both of my weekly online games are 730-1030ish. Chores and dinner are done and my wife, who usually only stays up until 9 or so, can settle into her stories while I settle into mine.

It depends on so many things--work hours, kids/no kids, scheduling, age, whether somebody is a morning person or a night owl, commute time, maybe even the time of year!

Hypothetically, if I were to play an online mid-week 3-hour game session, I would start as early as 3PM and play as late 10PM, but wouldn't any more than 3, maybe but unlikely 4 hours. Tuesdays or Wednesdays would be my go-to days if Mondays aren't an option.

In reality, including myself there are 4 people in our group. We all live within 5 minutes of each other and play in person on Mondays. Usually we start between 3-4PM, sometime 4-5PM, and play for about 3 hours. Works out well, as we start early enough that people aren't too tired and quit in time to give people time to so something before it is too late. If this group broke up, I doubt I would look for another or play online.

We have had a pretty solid weekday 6pm-8pm 5e game for over a decade. It used to be 4 hours on Sunday many moons ago. Now, I personally love the short 2 hour games with an end time. It's like watching a 2 hour movie, and when it's done it's done. We pick up where we stopped next time. It also allows me to plan ahead better and insert something I might have forgotten or want to change. I could do 3 hours, but honestly, my brain starts getting tired and I am ready to stop around 2 hours.
